I had to replace the entire rear assembly in my '02 4x4 SR5 Access recently so I swapped in a 2003 rear assembly that I found in a salvage yard; this one has ABS, original did not.

The original rear end only has ~ 36K miles on it so I would like to hang on to the good-as-new axles as spares.

Question is: Will these non ABS axles be compatible with a ABS axle housing?

Depending on what you are going to use the axle for, and it being a spare, I would go on a whim and say you are keeping the housing as a spare in case you crack it on a rock or what not. With that being said, if you end up cracking the housing, why not just change out the outers w/ the splines with the new housing, and you'll have a good as new axle? Just some food for thought.

Actually, the original axle housing is so badly rusted that I'm not sure its worth putting the effort into. I would need to cut off the leaking diff cover and weld a new one on and the rest of the gear on the outers is useless due to rust.

So I'm hoping that the (original) axles with existing bearings will be a direct swap (if needed) and that the absence of the ABS splines will be a non-issue when installing them in the new ABS rear housing.

Not sure I'm being completely clear, I'm no professional mechanic so my terminology may not be quite correct.

Well the splines won't be rusted, why not just swap your splines & outers to the new axle housing? Just a suggestion, someone else will have to chime in as I am no expert in first gens (or 2nd gens for that matter). :pout:

I'm already up and running on the "new" rear assembly. I got it complete with differential so after tearing down and rebuilding the outers, I installed it and all is well.

Now I have a spare 4.10 third and the axles from the original rear end.

If I remember correctly, the only difference between the two axles is the reluctor wheel on the axle shaft itself. I'm almost positive that they would swap right over.

Does the original have ABS sensors near the hubs?

If not, I don't know how the ABS system works.

    P.s. I want those 4.10's

have you taken your truck to toyota to have the frame inspected? im pretty sure that with rust like that on your axle youre bound to have a failing frame

Since your truck didn't have abs i dont think it matters that the new axle is abs capable. Only thing that axle has that is different is abs sensors. The brakes will still work as normal with out the sensors hooked up to anything.

I could also be entirely wrong.

    New frame in 2011.

I think I am confusing people:

    new_rear_end.jpg

I already swapped out the original rear axle assembly, complete with 3rd member/rear diff and am driving daily with this; no issues. It is a 2003 rear assembly with ABS. (my truck not using the ABS) I have the original 2002 rear axles from a non-ABS rear end. Can I use these as spares? Will they work in the 2003 ABS rear axle housing that is now installed in the truck?

PS: those Radflos are upside down...

I understand now. Yes they will work. The 3rds are the same. They fit right in place.

Oh well! At least you have a spare axle just in case anything goes bad. I'm sure you could remove the gearing for the ABS to use one shaft in an absolute pinch.

You still have spares if I read that correctly. They both use the same seal and the axle housing and 3rds are the same. I guess only way to know is give it a try.
