So didn't run out of oil, the gauge is just dumpy. Only took 188 gallons (~$685...). Power vent took a dump. Good times for all.

Psh. I live too far out in the country for NG; no lines out that far yet.
On the other hand, I don't have to worry about my house exploding...

I use a pellet stove and will go through about 3-tons of pellets without using a drop of oil this winter. Costs about $750 for all the pellets and add $10 a month on the electric bill to keep it going. The stoves come in free standing models and you can vent right through the wall (e.g. put it anywhere in the house).

Best free gift that came with the house purchase.

Same here, I want a wood stove real bad but I'm not sure my house is really set up for one. It's pretty sectioned off so it'd just sweat you out of one room while the rest out of house stays freezing cold. Still might add one though...

    Ouch.
So now you've got the fun bill of buying the oil, AND a new power vent!
    Wheee!

We've got one of those on our boiler; I'm not looking forward to the day it craps parts.
Or maybe I am, since it'll give me an incentive to rip the K1 monstrosity out and go propane on-demand.
Or maybe even go all out and get a pellet boiler...

Try about 5 grand for a whole new furnace. That's fun. Only good part is that it was the year before oil really went sky-high..the new unit got us almost double efficiency.

I would put a pellet stove in before a wood stove. There are a shit load of rules and regs that I would have to meet for a wood stove but the pellet stoves are different due to their construction

Interesting. I will have to look into that. The problem is more that with the house layout we have( long and narrow) there's really no good place to put one. My parents have a coal stove, and I think the cost is comparable to the pellet stove. And that thing throws some serious heat

My furnace isn't that old (2004), the power vents just don't seem to last. The prover tube on mine clogs up with soot/ gunk all the time. I end up drilling out the gunk once a month. Yup, drilling, shit is not soft. Hopefully the new one will work a little better. From research on the internets power vents just don't last that ling, and seem to have a decent amount of problems.

Our house has the same set up, lots of partitioned rooms off of a main hallway, stove in the living room. We close the doors to the rooms we don't use much and have the doorway upper corner fans to try and push the heat throughout the house. The living rooms gets to around 72° when we run it on medium with the rest of the house around 64°-68°.

On high, the stove gets the living room to about 80° and the upstairs bedrooms sit around 66°. Not the most ideal thing in the world, would love natural gas but Douglas is a little dated. Have two humidifiers running 24/7 to try and keep the static and dryness tolerable.

Not a bad compromise to keep the Saudi's away.
