You can replace just the power vent on a boiler or furnace.
I hate the K1 unit we have for a boiler right now. K1's pricey, I hate looking at the tank outside, and I have to worry about hitting it when I plow. The problem is that the boiler itself and all of its parts work perfectly, so I can't yet justify the cost of replacing it with something else.
However, if ANYTHING goes wrong on the boiler, I'm yanking that sucker out and getting something designed this century :D

Yeah but when it's blowing soot and oil around that's not good..and it wasn't visible. Took forever to clean the walls..and my poor cat who slept by the heater..

Damn, I wasn't aware of that... I want one of those old cast iron wood stoves. I want to put a stone slab under it and behind it so that whole thing just holds heat. If there's a ton of BS I have to go through to get one installed, I'll likely just scrap the whole thing. Damn rules and regs

    Gross, lol.
Our first house was a foreclosure with people who smoked like chimneys (or leaky power vents :D).
Took us forever to scrub the walls clean, even with the steam cleaner.

Ya it is a space and clearance issue, at least in my town. The FD had a check off sheet that had to be met before I could proceed. So I needed the FD's and the building inspector's approval.

This was probably worse..just an oily base that took about 5-6 times to remove. We had to repaint one room too.

X2 on the pellet stove. We have 2. We only run the one in the first floor. No longer have a real need for the one in the basement. Used to have coal actually I still have the stove in the basement not hooked up. Pellet stoves are cleaner. And easier to store the fuel. Just stack the bags up. Where as coal we had a truck back up and fill the silo in the basement that resulted in a fine black silt everywhere. The big downside is no power no heat. Unless you have a generator.

New power vent motor, back in business. And by business, I mean I have heat again. I wish I knew it was going to shit the bed, I would have just bought one and replaced it myself. Took like 20 minutes to change the motor out.

haha, i should. I don't think they're that expensive. If I would have known I would have just done it myself. A matter of removing like 8 nuts, pulling the motor out of the housing, un-hooking power/ground, repeat in reverse. It was getting a little louder than normal, but not crazy like it was going to fail. Hindsight 20-20 and such.

I hear ya, I had my heat go out on Christmas Eve last year. I had to call the oil company to make a call to my house. Turned out, it was a $50 electronic part that caused the problem, cost me $300 to have it diagnosed and replaced. :(
