Timing belt question

Firstly, I don't have my truck yet but will on Monday, having said that, it's got 100k on it. I think that this is about the time that the timing belt should be replaced however the Toyota dealer that I'm buying the truck from has no record of this being done on the truck I'm buying. What's the best way for me to determine whether or not it needs replacing, it's not a particularily cheap job to have done so I don't want to throw down the coin if it's only a month or two old...
Any ideas?

I did mine at 160K...same thing had no record of it ever being done so i went ahead and did it anyways...timing belt...water pump...T-stat...belts...etc...all at the same time...

 

Rule of thumb is... if there's no record, then treat it as if it hasn't been done.

 

On a 00 it says timing belt should be replaced at 152k...

 

You don't state whether you have a 4 cyl or a 6 cyl. 4 cyls have a chain which doesn't need replacing while the 6 cyl has a belt and needs to be changed at 90K.

 

I bought mine(1999 V6 4x4 sr5 xtra cab) with 56K on the odo. It was a lease trade in and I knew it had all the maintenance done to it, but I was curoius one day and pulled the fan, belts and cover off and found a water pump leaking, I didn't have a warranty so I did the h2o pump belt and cam seals all at once. The parts weren't all that cheap but my peace of mind was worth it. If it's a 3.4 V6 and the belt breaks you don't have anything to worry about, you won't mess any valves up but you will be stranded. I just liked knowing I was good for another 100K miles. By the way my waterpump was working fine, cooling was perfect but I had a wild hair up my but and found a problem. And as far as the water pump is concerned, buy a good one, spen the money once, new manufacture not a rebuild...I think they rebuild them.

 

the 2.7s have a belt not a chain the 22rs have a chain

 

You sure about that? I always thought that ALL 4 bangers had the chain.

 

yeah im sure i have a 95 tacoma now with the 2.7 and it has a belt...the 22r has a timing chain and so does v6 3.0

 

The 2.7L has a chain. The 3.4L has a belt.

thanks everyone, it's got the 3.4 in it so it's definitely a belt, I hear you all on the piece of mind side of things, just wondering if there are any tell tale signs that it's relatively new...also, what's a reasonable price to pay for a new water pump? Should I be budgeting a grand on a new timing belt and water pump plus the extras?

 

Did you make a deal on the truck yet? You should've had the dealer change the belt as part of the sale.

The best thing you can do, is shop around and get quotes. I doubt it'll be a grand, but that depends on where you go.

You can do it yourself with some research & some mechanical skills. My husband and I did the water pump & thermostat on our old 96.

hahaha, funny you should suggest that I work out a deal. I actually didn't see a service schedule until after I signed the sale agreement and only then did it occur to me...I'm hoping that the dealer will go half and half with me but even that might be a little tight given that I'm forking over a whack of cash on this thing...I have given thought to trying it myself, I am mechanically inclined but timing belts scare me a bit given the consequences of a poorly executed job....

 

CHANGE IT!

I bought mines used @ 140K. Had no freakin' record of whatever, not even the wipers. Do what crazyasu45 (post 2) did and you'll be fine. And with the peace of mind for another 100K at least, that's a plus!!!

Look around and there are posts on here and TTORA about how to change belts. I did mines myself. Bought parts too @ trdparts4u.com. They are cheaper there than the stealership...EVEN AFTER SHIPPING!!!

ONLY GET GENUINE OEM PARTS!!!...all the after-crap parts @ autozone/oreilly whatever, are really POS!!! THEY WILL CRAP ON YOU AND YOU'LL HAVE TO DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN!!! so try and get yer hands on some OEM stuff.

This was my first time doing the timing belts so it took me a while. Plus, I also wanted to take my sweet-ass time making sure everything was good-to-go. What you'll need as an SST (special service tool) which can be a chain wrench (there are many ways to skin a kitty). This tool will hold that pulley while you unbolt that bitch-of-a-bolt crankshaft bolt. You can get this at Sears. Trust me, I ran all over town asking a friend's friend's friend's friend's for this tool (because I didn't know better). I "made" a tool for this job myself but that failed miserably. After the work was done, I ran to Sears and found the same tool for like 25 dullas.

Depending on your location, a belt service should run you anywhere from 300-1000. My areas are 500+...!!! And this is timing belt, drive belts, water pump, thermostat, and the like.
