I still have a very hard time with using 0w20 in the 2TR, especially considering that the MY 05-07 call for 5w30 for the exact same engine. The 0w20 is recommended for my wifes Honda Fit, looks like water when i pour it in (Mobile 1). Seems like a giant jump just for fleetwide fuel economy, but guess the Toyota engineers know what theyre doing :)

Remember, Toyota only cares that you vehicle make it to 36,000 or 36 months so they don't have to pay warranty claims. Any fluids will make it that far.....

Mobil 1 is used so much because it's advertised so much. There''re all good.

That should read all major brands. There have been issues lately where some of the smaller blenders have been playing around with the additives and poor quality control = contaminants = premature engine damage

However, i am sure that is a mute point since i am sure no one here uses no-name brand oil

Synthetic is not needed -- having said that, I use and have used synthetic in most of my vehicles.

My '07 says 0w20/5w20 too. Must be just '05-'06 that are labeled 5w30. Wasn't there some graphic floating around from Toyota that back spec'd the 2TR to 0w20 all the way back to 2005?

My Fit hated Mobil1 oil. I don't know why but it would turn black as night pretty quickly. I still don't know why and I've never seen another engine do that. My only guess was maybe the molybdenum disulfide-coated piston skirts but I never read about other people having that problem. It was much much happier with the cheap $12/jug Motorcraft 5w20 blend. That oil would stay almost too clean to read the stick until the next change and the car would still get 40+ mpg reliably. That was the older L15A1, not the A7 that's in the current model though.

But apparently it is not entirely accurate.

    It does allow for 5w30 and 5w20 for the 4.0 from '95 to '09, 0w20-5w30 for '10 and '11, and 0w20 only for '12.
    Likewise, for the 2.7, 5w30 is allowed for '05, '06, and '10.
    5w20 and 0w20 for '05-'10, and 0w20 only for '11 and '12.

Good point... need to let PiercedTiger know about that, he might have a shot on his oil-burning 2AZ-FE.

And that looks like the correct list... at least it is consistent with what owners are seeing on their oil caps.

The one I posted above stopped at 2012 and is very different.

1995 ford explorer, 185,000, burns no oil, 5-30 Dino every 3-5K, 1995 Nissan 4x4, just sold it, 160,000, 5-30 Dino every 3-5k, fram, never used oil. 2014 tacoma on order, still thinking about whether I am going to change old habits that work!

Dino every 3-5k will do just fine in moderate climates, but please treat your engine well and stick with the OEM oil filter. You can get a box of 10 for $40 on ebay.

Weird. The engine hasn't changed between 2005 and now, but the allowed oil viscosity changes by the year? For example, how is 2010 the only year that lets the V6 use 0W20?

2010 emissions and CAFE standards... quickly decided that Xw20 was not a good idea ;)

Interesting that the Yaris is also 5w30-only.

The guy at the Dealership that sent me that chart said that things could change again. Companies are slowly going anyway from using conventional oil to full synthetic. As you can tell from the chart there has been changes over the years.

Also standards within the industry change. Government regulations change as well over time.

I see this as a good thing, but keep in mind that is is not going to reduce our use of crude oil. Ever since the Mobil-1/Castrol lawsuit, Group-III hydrocracked mineral base-stocks such as Rotella, Castrol Syntech, Valvoline, and many other "cheaper" synthetics can legally be marketed as "synthetic".

The jury agreed with Castrol that the hydrocracked mineral oil base-stocks were identical to the Mobil-1 Group-IV base-stocks on a molecular level.
Shortly following, Mobil-1 began blending Group-III base-stocks into their automotive products. Their motorcycle and jet turbine products are still pure Group-IV synthesized base-stocks.

"Full synthetic" simply means that it is not blended with conventional base-stocks, but it does not mean that it didn't originally come from decayed fern (we use the term "dino" but fossil fuels are primarily plant material, which is yet another reason that we are not going to run out.... the planet is still making oil).

As long that my country keeps getting it out of the ground, you're going to have gas and oil for your vehicle(as well as myself).

I had no idea that there was a lawsuit going on about this. I guess it's good that places like TW exist and we can avoid the crap oil and what not.
