Terrible MPG

winter mix fuel always plays a significant part in my fuel milage
are you running a heavy tire?
being in PA and doing highway you probly cruise at 75+ mph which would result in terrible MPG
try running midgrade fuel and staying below 70 mpg

 

17 mpg with 3" lift and all kinds of other shit.

Wow thanks for that. Always loved Tacoma's and finally was able to purchase one. Just requesting some information from the professionals at TacomaWorld. Sorry if I created a problem.

 

Don't be discouraged by these people. The Taco is definitely no hybrid but you gotta have a use for the sacrifice you pay for the truck. We all buy the Tacoma for it's abilities and if you buy a V6 4X4 you are going to have to accept the burden of its fuel consumption. so to speak.

 

Reliability, resale value, capability, dependability, etc. were my priorities.....i never cared about gas mileage. Besides it is a constant game of how much mpg can i push out of it this tank! Love my taco.

 

maybe run a couple tanks of premium fuel and see if you get an improvement. i get more miles per tank with the 94 octane fuel, its not a lot but probably 30 extra miles.

 

also not sure how low you run the tank but once my fuel light comes on i'm good for another 30 miles easy

First time you have to spend $300+ having the evap canister changed because you flooded it with fuel, you'll wish you had left that last half gallon at the gas station.

Manufacturer isn't going to warranty an evap canister that's been flooded with fuel from overfilling. They covered their ass when they put "WARNING DO NOT TOP OFF" on the gas cap.

 

Keep in mind that you have a 21.1 gallon tank. The low fuel light will probably turn on somewhere around 1/8th tank, and at that point, you'll take somewhere between 17 and 18.5 gallons (mine goes at about 17.5)

The gauge is just that. It's not a meter, and you can't tell yourself "Okay, it's at 1/4, I've used 15 gallons"

 

Ya, but 11-12 is not acceptable for a stock truck. It should be up around 16-18 at least.

 

That's what I was saying , do the mileage calculation properly , miles travelled divided by gallons pumped to refill

Ya I'm not calling B.S. there's deff a lot of info to find with a search on the effects of "over filling" the tank but, having filled my fuel tanks the same way maybe 2,500 times in my life time with manufactures from Toyota, Honda, BMW, Ford & GM and never having had a problem with anything related I just don't see it as much of a risk. In fact, I can't say that I even know of anyone ever having this problem.

And I don't live in a state that does emission checks. If I did, and had a problem, I think I'd do the DIY purge.

Fill the tank tomorrow.
Reset Trip-A on the odometer.

Drive until you're at 1/2 tank, or 1/4 tank, or whatever... doesn't matter.

Open the Calculator app on the phone and input the number on the odometer, then the "divided by" sign, then input the number of gallons that you bought.

Or open an account at fuelly.com and send a text message to them with your odometer reading, price, and # of gallons, and as long as you fill the tank every time, the running total will be correct.

I've done it too... and I've been on motorcycle rides when a flooded evap canister resulted in a bike not starting, then not staying on when we got it started... ran just fine the rest of the day when I bypassed the canister until he bought a new one.

The Tacoma is a bit more sensitive because the canister is in the back, about level with the top of the tank. Most vehicles I've had, it's been up by the radiator and a bit higher than the tank.

We've also had a few people here on TW share their experiences having to spend the $300+ to replace the thing (that's where I got the cost). So it does happen.
