So i recently bought a demo TRD dblcab Sport 4x2 and im very likely going to trade it in tomorrow on an sr5 dblcab 4x4. the trd felt just a little too "young" with its hood scoop and stickers...is this just some stupid precognition ive got or is the trd mostly a kids car. its gonna cost me $3500 all in to do the swap. im looking for validation and/or funny comments. flame suit on.

Do you not like your truck?
Really what is the difference? (besides the obvious 4x2 vs 4x4)
The Sport is bad@ss! Keep it, save the dough and roll that $3500 on a sweet trip to Vegas or
some Royal Caribbean cruise complete w/ grass skirts & umbrella drinks. :rasta:

The 2WD "Sport" truck thing is a little weird to me, but I'm sorta' old for the average person on this forum.
2WD trucks make a LOT of sense when you're looking for a work vehicle that rarely leaves the road and is operated in a region that sees little snow. 2WD trucks are simpler, lighter, less complex, easier to maintain and far CHEAPER to purchase and operate. But work trucks are utility type vehicles. I know people that intentionally seek out 2WD models to be used as work trucks for those very reasons and they get exceptionally long service out of them.
A truck that may be called upon to operate off-road, particularly in rough terrain, almost has to have 4WD due to the poor weight distribution of pick-up trucks. I learned to drive a 2WD truck off-road and that makes you a better driver when you have the advantage of 4WD, but there are times when you just flat need 4WD.
The "Sport" truck concept is something that I never got? To me, trucks are utilitarian vehicles. So in a nutshell, YES, its a "young" thing. I'll join you in being a target for the inevitable flaming.

Rip off the stickers and trade hoods with someone , problem solved

    Having said that , 4x4 > 2x4

I ordered a TRD Sport a couple of weeks ago.....(old SOB 58). Never did like the "work truck" look.
Buy and drive what you like....you've earned it!

    Welcome to TW! :)

    How old are you?

I'm guessing if you feel too old for it, you are too old.

But geezers would normally have at least some fiscal responsibility and avoid rash decisions such as yours/this. So, this is a conflict in my mind.

Do as the others have said. Get rid of the stickers & scoop and maybe then you'll be happy. Otherwise, burn the cash if you have to. We all make mistakes. No one will hate you especially the salesman and future buyer of your current truck.

Oh and go 4x4. Toyota makes a nice AWD van.

This. Nailed it, unless you WANT 4x4, pull the stickers (easy) and unload the hood (s/b easier).

Why did you buy the truck if you don't like it?

So I'm not bustin on the TRD Sport guys, because admittedly I think you have a much sportier and all around better looking truck of all the Taco's. And when I first got my Off Road I though "Fuck this is plain and blah", but the Off Road does have that grizzly blue-collar look that kinda grows on you.

As for the OP, it's up to you. I'm 39 by calendar and 17 by heart. Drive what you like and what suites your personality. Owning and driving a Tacoma in and of itself speaks volumes and they're solid trucks.

    im a ripe old 46.
i had just started shoping...the truck was a smoking deal. $26,500 +ttt new 2013 dblcab trd sport jbl mats mgm nav tow. it was all shiny. i blame my wife. she said "i know you want the hood scoop. vroom vroom" im a car nut and fell for the glam. then i saw the survey below and started to wonder...and then the i-shoulda-gotten-a-4wd feeling hit. im getting 27k on the trd as a trade-in so im just losing part of the bs fees the dealer charged. ill sleep on it.

This. You'd probably get some cash in the deal for your scooped hood too.

As far as feeling old...it's all in what you feel. I'm 30 now (shudder) and I've got a car with a hood scoop, shopping cart wing that can be heard a quarter mile away.

I'm still scratching my head over who the target market is for the TRD Sport. I guess they are intended for those who intend to stay on pavement, but might need 4x4 to get easily down and back up an algae-covered boat ramp with something small and fast.

I'm only 3 years younger, but granted my certification is in Internal Audit instead.

I think of a limited slip differential as a calculated risk.

Lick my sack! I'm not much younger than him and I get hit on by my oldest daughters friends who think that I'm in my late 20's. Maybe it's the fitness, marathons, IMs, etc. but I hardly feel 39. Show some respect instead of being a douchebag!

If you don't need 4X4, rip the sticks and keep the beast - gott a work buddy who's old and decrepit like us and just bought a Pre-Runner because that's all he needs, and he's happy as a lark! If you're gonna explore the back woods for the right fishing hole or camping spot and may need 4WD to get you outa a jam, then trade up. Either way, just be happy with your rig! :bananadance:

Holy shit 46 & you can surf the net, see, type, pass your drivers test & manage to get in the poor access door of our trucks. Of course being retired you have more time to figure that crap out.

So, I think some of the age graph might be skewed towards the lower end for several reasons...like too many to list.

I say keep the truck man & make it yours.
