It's off topic (I'm the king of driving a thread right off the rails) but, I've been around a few at audio competition events and some of those people at those events hate Sony. I own, have owned and would buy Sony again and I like its products but they get little respect...for reasons unknown to me....

11.2 surround. It's been out there but I've never had the luck of getting to experience it in a home theater setting. I know some movie theaters use it but, the format seems to have limited availability so most units "upscale" the affect.

Yea yea, I own an Axiom sub, I've just learned of them a few years ago and added one to my "garage" system. Nice product. Mine has a shielding issue as any electronic device (say a cell phone) left near it will cause it to make some crazy sounds! :)

OP for your intent of mostly just listening to music (with little home theater expectation) on a budget I'd be looking for 5.1 at most.

Oz I rocked a Sony receiver for years and it sounded great. The problem with Sony is that you win some you lose some. I still use the receiver for the garage sound system.

Currently I have an Onkyo 7.2 700w I believe. High output. Have it set up for all channel stereo as I've grown less fond of surround sound. Have 4 3-way towers (sound stage) they aren't the greatest but I was able to play them louder in the showroom with less distortion as they are not meant to reproduce big bass. To combat that I have a 15" subwoofer 300w that just....well its crazy. To add to that I have a 10" velodine woofer set at a higher frequency. When the quality started to fade I was able to pick up a set of 15" Yorkville stage speakers from work and now it's just plain loud. I've actually lost some hearing from it.
All in I've spent a little more than 3000 maybe.

Ive never understood the hate against sony either. I get that people don't like Bose because the quality/price ratio is a little out of whack but I like the ones I have. Sony I've never had a problem with. The studio I had classes in the past few years in college had a Sony mixer that was really nice. Also had a Genelec 7.1 system that was really nice.

But yea I was just kinda throwing out a number. The two I am looking at are closer to the $250-300 mark.

I'm not looking for anything super high quality just better than what I've got. Not trying to win any awards or cool points. Just looking for a better setup for my music and not trying to spend $2k on it at the moment.

The problem I found when switching systems was that you get used to a certain sound and enjoy it. Then you change it up and it takes years to set it up again.

One more quick question.. I've done some research and at the price point I'd like to be at, I found two different receivers that are essentially the exact same.. One is a Yamaha and one is a Harmon/Kardon. The H/K is $20 more, and the Yamaha has 10W more per channel, but all the other features (at least the ones that I care about at the moment) are the same.

I know neither is top of the line, but is one brand better than the other at the lower price point?

Both are decent brands. If both are the same in terms of what you want save the $$$ and get the extra watts.

Alright cool, thats what I figured. The H/K is on Clearance (old model I guess?) but is still $20 more. I just wasn't sure if one was notorious for any specific little problems. haha I hadn't heard of any and couldn't find any in my research but just wanted to see what you all thought. Thanks for all your help man!
