    Yeah, that makes sense.
And I definitely agree that it should be much cheaper.

I guess I'm a rebel. Too lazy to get a flu shot and I don't really get the flu.

For the years that I do take it, a single factor will generally point me to whether or not to take the flu vaccine.

Am I unemployed/Will I be interacting with many people during the flu season? Since the flu season easily spans early fall into late spring, much longer than say the Backcountry Trail Closures of State Parks, if I'm not working, I won't need it. Fomites won't really be an issue for me since I'm not touching anything and physical interaction with people is unlikely so I probably won't get sick.

However, When I was working in Help Desk, it was definitely a must have. In working environments where you have coworkers who bring in germs from their kids or the interns who are getting it from their roommates and classmates. It's impossible to stay away from all the fomites and there are always people [namely engineers] who lack the ability to cough whilst covering their mouths. Ending up in the path of a projecting sprays of nasal passageway aerosols in volumes exceeding 250 cubic feet is quite common.

Try staying germ free in that environment.

In my 5 years of working in that sort of environment, the flu shot worked 3/5 times. This was through the years of the swine flu and a few other pretty bad ones. I caught the flu annually at least once a year except for 2/5. And I was around plenty of sick people.

In our IT Department (over 20 of us), we worked pretty closely and about half of us got the flu shots annually, (other half were staunchly against it). During the years it worked, the folks that didn't have the flu shot would generally get sick vs the folks that did have the flu shot. The years where the flu shot didn't work for anybody.

Certain things that never ever worked were supplements such as Airborne or Vitamin C, Selenium, Zinc tabs, and other holistic crap people keep trying to sell me on. Honestly, an early night's rest with three fingers of scotch, anti-histamines, and a tab of pseudoephedrine (nasal decongestant) worked better than anything else.

Scotch makes you less stressed out, the Anti-Histamines knock you the f'out and if there's absolutely ANYTHING you're allergic to, you won't have to worry about Post Nasal Drip actuating those mucusal membranes, and the pseudoephedrine reinforces that. PND is the most common cause for cough and it's what can happen naturally due to allergy or overactive mucus membranes, or exacerbated by cold/flu.

Stop that Upper Respiratory Tract Inflammation before it starts, and you'll never have pneumonia, bronchitis, or a cough.
