Alright guys, I have a problem. Seems as though my hard drive failed. I ran my HP systems check and it showed a hard disk failure. Is there anything I can do or do I have to replace it or what. This is the message I got.

    Yeah.
Were you having problems and then decided to run a check, or did this message just come up?

Run the check a couple more times, and if it continues to fail, you need a new HDD. Hopefully you have a backup for your data.

It was running fine but then it cut off. I tried restarting it and doing it from the disc but nothing. I ran the check 3 times from the boot page and it resulted in this error every time.

Sounds like I need new one. Can I just replace it with any HDD for a laptop? I have an old laptop with a good HDD that I could transfer if I could.

If the laptop is in warranty, and HP will replace it for free, do it. Otherwise, HP will charge you their version of full price for a new HDD, which will cost twice as much as it would from somewhere like Best Buy. How old is the old laptop? New HDD is probably the way to go anyways.

It is out of warranty. That's the first thing I checked lol. But the old one is from 2009 and it is way smaller but I swapped it in and am in the process of rebooting everything now. Will definitely have to upgrade later.

I meant to reply to this with a story.

For the most part, the development of semiconductor libraries and chips requires reading and writing of thousands of files. Most are relatively small although some can be quite large. Full chip is only slightly different.

We did an evaluation of several storage vendors of which none really suite our requirements. I made a recommendation to stick with the current vendor even though one of the relative new comers to the game actually performed better-mostly because they were very new but also because we were not able to perform as large a load test as would be required to demonstrate compatibility with the hardware we were given.

Through a somewhat complicated series of circumstances, we ended up with one of these new boxes. Migration went pretty well up to the midway point when the number of CPUs writing the box exceeded 500. And then shit hit the fan and it was not pretty. In the end, our earnings call made reference to the unsuccessful installation and the following day, we went to one meeting and the boss went to another.

    Interesting times.

Not sure if this is the right place to put this, but attended a Missouri Geographic Alliance meeting. Lots of good presentations, and made some good connections with fellow GIS people. (And won some awesome books in the raffle!)

Anyone else into the GIS career field? (Geographic Information Systems)

The Missouri Geographic Alliance isn't just GIS, but that is why I attended.

GIS is an interesting field-from what little I know of it. Lot's of opportunity to learn other stuff too.

    It is very interesting.
I use ArcGIS for my software, and it is powerful stuff..
Get involved if you can. It will make you think differently about everything.. At least for me it has.

I can not for the life of me find the statistic from the Department of Labor, but last I heard, 300,000 + more jobs in GIS are expected in the next 5 years.. With a average salary of $75,000.. And I am sure most of you would take $75,000 a year.

Edit: Back to what you said about lots of opportunity to learn other stuff:
With GIS, you can literally work with whatever you want. Whether it is population, crime/medical, natural disasters (Speaking of which, I was tagging the Australian wildfires a few weeks ago), hell, even where tacomas are and why! Your possibilities are unlimited.

Over 47,000 subscribers to him and only one video??:eek::eek:

Pretty cool guy. What is he doing now? I doubt with that net worth, he didn't have to work a single day after he left.

Needing a new backup drive for the home computers. Looking to stay with Western Digital. Always had dependable drives.
Is the only difference between My passport and my Book is that the passport has a removable drive? I think I would prefer that, in case I ever needed an emergency drive for a computer..

For only a $3 difference, I see no reason to get twice the space.. but I wanted to check with you guys.

You could remove the drive from either of them if you wanted to. Might as well get the passport, since it's twice the space and doesn't need external power.

I'd get the 2T drive. I would also be sure and manage it with the OS and not the tools that might come with it ;)
