Damn almost lost a finger

 

At my college job we had a yard dog tractor with one of those things in it. It was so badass I almost killed myself in it at work. I did a speed run down the quiet back side of the yard while another guy watched out for traffic at the other end. I went screaming down one side of a 100-door terminal and was still accelerating when I knew I had to slow down. I barley touched the brakes and the unloaded rear axle locked up immediately (these tractors did not have front brakes) and I almost lost control, so i thought, OK, that will kill me, but here comes the end of the yard, and that will also kill me. So I eased it into a speed-bleeding gentle turn and at the limit of the tires' grip around the top of the yard along short rows of trailers I really couldn't see beyond, and I had a death grip on the seat cushion with my sphincter. Any abrupt control inputs were out of the question, and I thought for sure a truck will pull out in front of me and I would not be able to avoid it. No seat belt of course, just be sitting in a sheetmetal box hanging over the front axle a few feet off the ground.

 

Dude, I didn't think i was going to live to see my break time. The doors on these things had completely worn-out latches and would sometimes just open during righthand turns. I had to jamb my foot against the side of the cab so I wouldn't fly out and run over myself.

When it was raining and work was slow, we would spin them through the yard in pirouettes, just swapping ends several times.

And then there were the forklifts...it wasn't quite like the crazy Arab videos, but almost. I shit myself several times doing that, too.

 

seriously..the more i read into this the more im like..wtf..why didn't i just do this first..

 

My boss tells me this morning that they want a crew up there by December 1!
