CB Radio Setup Suggestions

I got a Cobra 19 Ultra III for my birthday a couple months ago. I just now got around to looking into the things I need for my truck to install it. I drive a 2013 Access Cab. I still have no clue where to mount the Unit itself. I'm open to all suggestions. Thanks for your help in advance.

Will the antenna "kit" I listed work with this mount? If this won't work please direct me in a direction that will work.

I was looking at this for the antenna mount:

I have no clue about CB Radios. I have watched videos and read forums to kind of figure it out. Another thing the picture in the firestik kit, the guy drilled a hole out the back of his cab right above the bed. I want to avoid that unless thats the only way. I dont mind drilling into my truck but that spot doesnt appeal to me at all. If thats the only way then ill suck it up and drill but I'm hoping someone can tell me another way to run the coax cable to the antenna on the tailgate without having to drill there. My toolbox would hide it well though if i did have to drill there, and I'm guessing I'd need a rubber plug to put there to run the wire through to seal the rest of the hole and keep water out.

 

The firestik "kit" is $52.45. I got on Amazon and pieced together the kit with just the antenna, the coax cable, and the K4 antenna stud mount seeing as how I wont need the 3-way mirror mount. The firestik antenna i found was 5' instead of 4'. Would it be better to get the stuff off amazon and pay the extra $8 to get an extra foot of antenna and give up the mic holder?

I also notice what appears to be a ground wire going from the antenna stud mount, is that what it is? Just grounding for the antenna?

 

IMO, ditch the firestik from Amazon. I think I find more people that are happier with a standard antenna than a non-ground plane one (NGP). Go to a Loves gas station and buy one from them, mount it on the BAMF tailgate bracket and run a ground from it to the frame and the coax to the receiver in the cab.

 

Also, that's a pretty small CB but works well. A lot of first gens run them because they fit in the small cubby below the HU. Your best bet would be under the seat if you don't want to see it, or mount it on the passenger side where their left knee would be on the wall.

Then what I thought was a ground wire actually seems like this piece:

So now I'm all sorts of confused.

 

Those 2 would be ideal for the setup, yes. Find a ground braid about 4' long, a self tapping screw (or find an existing ground on the frame) and tap in to the frame. Use a wire brush, file or a grinder to expose the bare metal on the frame (not much maybe a quarter size) and make the connection. I will find a diagram so you can ground it properly.

 

I will give the same advise I always give when I see the word Firestik: Don't do it. Get a Wilson mag mount and plop it down and fugget about it.

 

Find someone with a multimeter or continuity checker and use this pic to guide you. When everything is said and done have someone help you calibrate it with an SWR meter.

 

What is this piece? one end plugs into something and the other end goes on the stud mount? Will that stud mount work with the BAMF mount?

I'm stationed in Germany for the time being so no access to a Loves station, but I should find an antenna thats not NGP?

 

so with that coax cable wrapping around the stud thats the same thing as just having coax plugs on both sides? my cb will still get signal?

You mentioned drilling holes in your truck. You might try and do some research to see if there is such a thing as wireless antennas first.

 

Too late, Now the Government will listen to your CB transmissions....use the Handle Rusty Shackleford, you should be safe then....lol I posted where I put my CB in my Taco AC. any questions about the install, feel free to hit me up.

I looked into a few antennas and for the money the Wilson 1000 is amazing. everyone has their preference, but the magnetic mount wilson 1000 has great receive and DX abilities.

Even the Little Wil is a better antenna than a Firestik. At around $35 you can't beat it.

So with the little wilson or the wilson 1000 I'd just hook my cb up then screw the antenna in and toss it up on the roof and go? Do you guys run the antenna cable out the window (side or rear sliding) or out of the door then close the door on it?
