Yes, and you can operate it with a HAM license (on certain freqs). It is not convenient in any way, and I can only get comms with my office in Seattle (from eastern oregon) about half the time depending on solar conditions. I would advise a PLB. Better yet, rent one with message service. I use them at work for backcountry travel to access remote radio sites in the winter. You can send an "I'm OK" message. Unlike SPOT they use military satellites...

As far as HAM stuff for bugout reasons...there is a very extensive nationwide network of repeaters and lots of nerds manning them. What this means is you can pass a message from anywhere to anywhere if you can at least reach someone on a repeater. It's not simple, but it works.

I agree with this in principle. Shit can happen but is more likely to happen to the foolish, which we are not.

I think there is technician, General, and Extra..probably go for General at the same time as tech..maybe Extra at some point..figure why not? shouldn't be too hard.

So much better than CB. There's really zero comparison.

Definitely study for the test; but, just like any test - it can easily be passed with memorization and a basic knowledge of theory. I was actually pissed at how easy it was, I studied for weeks - and passed the test with 96% in about 3 minutes..

In my opinion it's just stupid not to have at least a 2 Meter radio in your rig if you plan on venturing out of cell range.

I do carry a PLB in an ammo can, but that's for absolute last ditch shit hit the fan scenario...

The radio stays off most of the time when I'm in town, not really too keen on listening to old guys chat about what they had for dinner/radios, etc.. But, there are some pretty fascinating repeater systems in place - especially the IRLP/Echolink nodes. A few people that I go out with are operators too, and the clarity for vehicle to vehicle comms is unbeatable. Shit, with 5 watts you have an effective range of 5 miles - depending on terrain. Try that with CB.

My setup cost about $200, is bulletproof - and has an effective range of about 80 miles. Had a contact on simplex at 150 miles at high elevation!

Not trying to come across as a goober - just trying to get more off road types into it.

It's all in what you want to do.

Tech is perfectly fine for 2 Meter. General and above opens up some fairly interesting HF bands..

 

I'm sold. I want to do it. Be fun and a good investment for the rig. Plus I like feeling out on stuff. Can't hurt

HF would be fun..figure I can do both at the same time.

I went with a Yaesu FT-1900R..

About as basic as you can get. Awesome little radio, no fan - and 55W output. Easy to use, and a kickass speaker.

Also.. Infections suck. Picked one up when I was out in Yellowstone a couple weeks ago.

By day 3 of my trip I was having 102 degree fevers and excruciating pain. Day 5 of the trip, walking required severe mental preparation and a slew of expletives.. After sitting at a walk-in up in Bellingham for 4 hours, only to be told that I have to get to the ER.

4 days of IVs, and opening my knee up to drain the fluid..in the hospital, got out a couple of weeks ago. Was about 2 days from going septic. Worst pain of my life - and I'd consider myself to have a high pain threshold.

Was pretty amazed at how the nurses were shocked that I refused pain meds, after I told them I was "dealing" with the pain. I took them once right after they cut me open; didn't like how they made me feel... Pretty insane how readily they were pumping people full of Percoset/Dilaudid.

Bottom line. Don't fuck around if you think you've got an infection..

But, I was the only person at Mammoth..

 

I was wondering how you fared at yellowstone. Did you try to make it up to goose lake/cooke city?

 

Did get out on a small side trail out in Big Sky. Buck Lake/Doe Lake Roads. That mud is some slippery chit. Especially in the off-camber spots..







But, honestly - my priority at that point was to get myself and my rig closer to Bellingham.

so i can keep my handgun in my center console if the clip is out? or i can have it loaded in plain view?

that's a bit different from CO...CO you can have a loaded handgun in your truck and it's not considered concealed if it's for a legal purpose, ie protection or hunting

looks like WY is a free for all, but doesn't say anything about handguns in vehicles...

guess i can just keep the clip out while traveling...

 

From everything I found, which is just what you posted, I would say yes everything you said is correct. I thought I could carry while loaded in a vehicle with my CWP but there is nothing that says that.
