Lifted 1st gens let's see em

is it common to have lifts done by shops, or is it more of a do it at home project. i ask bc id like to lift my truck but im a bit hesitant and kinda clueless as to how to go about it. Im wanting to take it to a shop b/c i dont have the tools/time/space ect to do it.That sounds funny reading it but its the truth.

would i be looked at funny if I ask shop to use parts that i buy (i.e. some setup i find on this forum ect).

Nothing wrong with having a shop do it for you if you don't have the tools/time/know-how to do it.

I attempted my front suspension two weekends in a row but couldn't do it, so I ended up paying somebody to do it.

If you do pay a shop to do it, ask if you can help or watch them or something to learn. Some places are very strict about not letting others in their shop, but it can't hurt to ask.

 

I'd go 33X12.5...once aired down that extra half inch turns into a full inch of more tire touching the ground. Makes a big difference, especially in the winter when you tend to run lower than normal air'd down pressure. Just my two cents....

 

The tire will get much longer than it will wider when you air down, making the tire more like a tank tread than a 14" wide tire.

The biggest reason to get the SAE sized tire, price.

 

Man, I just about spat out my coffee when I read that...How on earth does a tire get "longer" when you take air out of it? I don't know what kind of tires your running on your truck, but mine are round, and decrease in overall width when air is let out of them therefore increasing the foot print the tire has when in contact with the ground. Hence why you air down. Smoother ride, increased traction, better floatation.

And originally...that's what the debate was. 305/70 or 33x12.5.

I don't think he meant literally longer. He just meant that the footprint gets longer, as well as wider. The same thing happens to the length of the footprint as the width. The more you air down, the more comes in contact with the earth.

first time with the duratracs in the snow. ski mtn are starting to make snow and this road is directly behind it, catching all the drifts from the snow guns.

 

ya just on the front. 1.5" spacers, about half a inch from the UCA but with the spacers and a leveling kit, all i had to do was hit the firewall in some and trimmed about 1" off the fenders maybe less maybe more, and they cleared very well. full flex the only rubbing was in the rear on the bed sides in the wheel well. full lock no rub and i never really full locked while flexing but never felt anything when i had to turn and flex.

Looks like I started a debate. I will probably go with 33x12.50. I may try to the new Dick Cepek Fun Country. Any opinions?

 

How much wheeling do you do? Type of terrain? City driving? Those are all factors I'd take into consideration before purchasing a tire. I personally...MTR Kevlar or Micky Thompson MTZ. Both I've seen been run on shale rock, heavy mud, and snow past your eye balls, and both have eaten everything thrown at them for lunch. Exceptional tires with years of refining behind them.

 

The kevlars seem to wear weird. They go great for the first 3/4 then that weird ridge in the middle pops out of whack. But in theory you sell a tire every time it gets to 50% so you only pay for the good half of the tread Let someone else buy the crap off you.

 

Love my KM2's. I'd like to try the MT/R's, but why change if I'm happy with what I've got?

 

Yeah I had the same issue I should have got the km2s again but instead I got the all terrains:/

Ya I'd run the spacer. Without then it will definitely rub
