I think mine came with 265 70....so my jump to 265 75 was not big. There is some debate between 285 vs 255 but the math backs up the 255 having more traction. I'm pretty sold on the tall skinny tire.

That would be nice to have a dedicated Offroad set of wheels!

Want to come out with us on HWY 2 on your way back up to Bellingham Saturday, or where ever the hell you're about to go?
Seems like it could be anywhere knowing you and your spontaneous road trips lol (that's jealousy you're hearing)

Saturdays are a no go for me, otherwise I would join you. NF-6830 is a great road. I went over Tonga Ridge this summer. There a couple of great view points looking north over hwy 2. I think they were at the end of some spurs. You guys have fun - and be safe!

I'm just gonna ignore that word and all I see is "it is on my way back" :D

Sounds good. When I got mine pulled I was good the next day, just loopy which isn't bad, you just zone out as if you pulled an all nighter or something along those lines

Shoot, if there's another meet before I leave for basic then we'll have to do it on a Sunday

I think you have it backwards Mutilatedjak. 285s are narrower than 33s. Unless it is a brand specific thing. But I know for a fact that Toyo 33s are almost an inch wider than 285s. I know because I was always jealous of my roommate's FJ with 33 Toyos while I had 285s.

As for the wheeling this weekend, I am a definite maybe! I was actually thinking of adding even more value to the drive up there and camping somewhere Sat night. Anyone else interested in spending the night in the mountains? If it is too snowy/cold at elevation we can find somewhere lower and more hospitable. You know, for wives and girlfriends and such not for us gritty men ;).

    You're confusing diameter and width. 285 is a width(basically 11.5"), 33" is a diameter and can be many different widths(255/85/16 for example, is a 33 that's only 10" wide).

285s can be 33s. 33s refer to the diameter only and have nothing to do with the width of the tire.

I have 33" diameter tires. The metric size is 285/70-17. 285 is the section width of the tread (285mm or 11.5in). /70 is the sidewall aspect ratio. Which means the sidewall height is 70% of the tread width. In my case, my sidewalls are 7.87".
    So (7.87 * 2) + 17 = 32.8" dia. Not an exact 33".

My point is - you can achieve 33" by having different widths and sidewall heights.
Here are examples of 33" tires: 255/85-16, 285/75-16, 305/70-16. A 255 is only 10" wide. Some guys like that there is no rubbing issues with these. The later two are about an inch difference in widths, yet they achieve the same diameter.

Also don't forget that the width of your wheel can influence the overall width of your tire.

Check this link out. It was very helpful for me when I was researching my tires.

    You're right about weight.
But wheel selection is critical when choosing a larger tire size. Also UCA selection/adjustment can help.
I have 285/70-17 (33"), and I have only a little rubbing at full lock, full stuff, in the front of the wheel wells. It is so minor that I haven't bothered to trim there. I have zero rubbing in the rear of the front wells - no need for cab mount chop or pinch weld mod. I just removed the flaps.

I was a bit laid out the day I got them pulled. Even if you have enough energy to get out, you look like an idiot for the next few hours unknowingly slobbering blood with a swollen face. I did get some raised eyebrows when I leaned out my car door and spit a huge mouthful of blood on the street, lol. That was about 20 years ago.

The next few days were fine except for the fact you can't eat the foods you want to eat. I didn't go lifting weights but I could walk around, go to school, do all the normal things. I'd bet you won't have any problems physically driving and going to the mountains. Might be a bit tired if you have to dig but that's what college girls are for
