I truly believe the 2nd gen has the better drive train. I love the interior and exterior of my 07 but my 1997 4runner (same as a Tacoma) was incredible. The 3.4L is legendary and mine ran perfectly without so much as a tick when I sold it at 170,000 miles. The current 4.0 has great power but is the noisiest thing I've ever driven. The fuel injector chatter on these trucks is almost unbelievable and the fuel mileage...17mpg in the 2007 while my lifted 1997 with high miles got 22mpg! Definitely some pros and cons.

I'll add another problem with the 2nd gen. fucking plastic bed, WTH? 6 months and I've already cracked a hole in the drivers side wheel hump. 10 years of the same abuse put a couple dents in the 1st gen bed.

If you want comfort and a daily driver and all the fancy gadgets buy a comfy 2nd gen.
But if you are a man and want a real off road truck that will not break down and will last a lifetime buy a 1st gen.

Typical mentality of a 2nd gen owner.
