Stereo question/Backup Camera

My buddy just bought an 09 regular cab taco and it doesnt have the trd package or anything its just the prerunner and he says there is a camera on the tailgate but it doesnt come up when he puts it in reverse, he has no button on the mirror, is it just camera ready or what? the other question is can i put my stock stereo in his it was the 6 cd changer that came with the JBL package? thanks guys

I have heard of Tacomas with the camera (and wiring) but without the monitor mirror. It's part of the SR5 or higher package. Search around and you should find some info on here or Toyota Nation.

Apparently they started putting blanks in place of the camera on later production '09s.

Thats stupid! why would they install a camera that wont function unless you buy an after market screen or the mirror?

they just made them all camera ready, lame that they didnt just put the mirror in but yeah.

 

Because it's cheap to make them all with the little camera built in (the camera itself is probably ridiculously inexpensive) and some wire, then just attach the expensive mirror to the upgraded models.
