    You might want to change out that FIRE RING set-up to the TERMINAL END type (pictured). When the FIRE RING craps out just cut it off and do up the coax like in the picture below.

    If you do go that route make sure you coat the ends with COAX SEAL tape - it helps keep moisture out thus preventing corrosion. Heck, I would use it on the FIRE RING connector now!

    Roof is best, hood is second best, tailgate mounts are not a very good choice, only a hitch mount would be worse. :p

    I'd use the same antenna that Dave did. The larsen NMO 27b. It's the same style as the Wilson but the loading coil isn't as large, doesn't have to be either. We're only using 4 watts. :D

    These NMO gutter mounts are inexpensive as well. Very easy to take the antenna off and use an NMO rain cap if you don't want the antenna on the truck.

    I need to get an antenna for my CB, so this is a good thread to subscribe to. I have a basket on my roof and I was thinking of attaching the antenna to that. What do you guys think, and which antenna for the roof/basket mount??

    For those that are running an RF linear amplifier? What does it do for them?

    Generally speaking antennas come in at least two form factors, Whips and fiberglass sticks. It's a personal choice. Both have pro's and cons. For a roof mount, a whip on a spring would probably work well for performance and allow the antenna to flex if you hit tree branches etc. Here is a great selection of whip style antennas:

    What are your thoughts on antenna size. 3' vs. 4'? Or does it make that big of a difference?

    Longer is better (thats what she said :p), so really a 102" SS whip would be best, but a 4' will do for 99.9% of everyone's use. I have been using that 4' Wilson flex all year with great success, SWR less than 1.2

    I had a 4' for years. Now that I have a 102" SS ill never go back to fiberglass.

    Longer is typically better in most cases for a cb.

    Im gonna get a 4'. I actually saw a jeep with a 4' wilson on it at the gas station. Should be perfect.

    Thanks guys for the info.

    Once I get it all hooked up, that might be another story. Ive yet to find a CB shop in the STL area. Theres only one that Ive seen has horrible reviews.

    Installed a Uniden 510 with a Firestick 4'. Also put a spring and quick disconnect on the antenna for parking decks.

    Ran the wires directly to battery and installed a fuse at the battery.

    Ran wires through firewall by attaching to a coat hanger and poking through grommet with other wires.

    Antenna mount using some stainless bolts and washers (Think they were 1" washers and they slid right into the channel with the endcap off.

    Mounted radio under coin tray. It still opens "most" of the way and can still be removed. I also added a quick disconnect on wires coming out of radio as the 510 doesn't have a disconnect.

    Bought everything from Right Channel Radio. About $160 total.

    Is there a reason I cant just plug into the 12 outlet and use a mag mount antenna on the roof (provided the swr is good)? I would rather do that as a temp install and take it down when not in use
