Here are the rear end shots. My truck first, 2006 with 100k, bar and chain oil sprayed. [IMG]

Here is the local 2009, 60k with no protection. Sorry the shots are not all the best quality in the world. [IMG]

I feel that I should clarify. My 06 has spent only one winter in Vermont. It has so little surface rust under it due to being a MA truck, not due to being oil sprayed every year. I bought it about a year ago, wrecked, at auction and got it on the road in August. It was a MA truck and I've put only 2k on it to date. My application of bar and chain oil a month ago was the first application the truck has seen. It was dry before that time and had not seen any rustproofing.

I just talked with the owner of the other truck. His truck is not an 08, it is an 09!
It's got around 60,000 miles and not 50k.

The pictures are mainly to illustrate why I feel the need to use some kind of rust protection overall, not to show how well bar and chain oil works. We'll see how well it works over time.

I don't think anyone would argue that for a vehicle that lives in a salty environment, be it winter road salt, or hot, humid Florida.

Also to illustrate what bar and chain oil looks like sprayed on a vehicle.

What are you using to spray it? Garden sprayer, spray bottle? How does it atomize, seems like it's too sticky to spray right.

I used a Binks gun. I don't have the model number with me now. I did a search on it when I had the number a couple weeks ago and couldn't find it online. It's a gun that we have at my work. It wasn't airless. I bumped the air up to 100lbs and that helped. It kind of spit the stuff out but it all flowed out anyway. I just googled "undercoating spray gun" and a few came up that I think would work. One on ebay for 29.99.

I did purchase the frame plugs. You can see them in a couple of the shots. At most locations there is an inside hole aligned with the outer hole. I have not plugged those yet. I bought ten plugs and only have 2 left. I would think the amount of debris that will enter from the inside would be marginal vs the outside next to the wheel openings. I sprayed at least a quart into the boxed frame on the front. I didn't inspect it fully. The gun I used has an 18" wand so I was able to stick that in from the open end of the boxed section and spray that direction as well.

This is the first application. I just started driving the truck in August.

The boxed part of the frame, why not take a grease gun and pack it full and call it good? The heat from the cats would cause it to spread.

Now you're buying grease , why not get fluid film or Rust Cure Formula. 3000

I think longer term it would work better. Plug the holes and I don't think much would seep out. I would like to try that formula 3000 stuff though

I received my cans of 3000 from Canada a couple of days ago complete with a Customs Form on the box. I like the water displacing properties and dryness of the finished product of 3000. In theory at least. It is 8 deg. F right now, I was going to drill the frame and spray 3K then bolt my sliders on this weekend. Screw that crap I'm getting too old to dork with it at these temps. And not sure about adhesion of anything when it is this cold.

Yesterday I talked to a shop in town that I trust and they spray a wax undercoating with a warranty. I know wax works I used to boil my traps in a 55 gal. drum with sumac tops after they turned from red to black (same thing as hot bluing with salts for a gun) and then pull them up through a top layer of melted paraffin and pine pitch. Prevents rust in water sets and scent proofs them for land sets, steel holds scent like a SOB. Saw about 80 of my old traps in a barn a few years ago and they all still looked brand new. Some are more than 40 years old now. I'm taking it in Tuesday and have them do the wax spray in and around the frame and undercarriage then next spring do the 3000. Then in the fall have them do the wax over top of it again. It is $100 to have them do it, I consider that a fair price and cheap insurance in the long run. The 3000 was $60 for 4 cans, you would have thought they could have sent along some Canadian Crack (Tim Hortons) with it too.

2 holes on each side and 5 on the bottom of each side.

That would take gallons of grease. It would also require holes to be welded closed and a cap to be fitted and welded somehow, at the end of the boxed section under the cab. In my mind, it would require a frame off to do it properly.
