Just because they once sucked does mean they can't be redone and improved?

Does that mean they will always suck?

I just can't believe the bashing, when nobody has experience with the new model.

From what I understand Chevy's quality is greatly improved... If it causes Toyota to do some much needed upgrades to the Tacoma... How can that be a bad thing?

These statements are absolutely correct... And the edited part of your reply has great points also.

But you seem to neglect the fact that, which is the unwritten meaning of my previous response of "do nothing", Toyota is & has been doing something...

That's WHY they're in the position they're in now, being market leaders in certain categories. Compact trucks has been "their" niche since the early 80's.

All in all, face it... We will continue to buy Toyota compact pickup trucks until something better comes along, or our needs/wants change our vehicle choice.

I've driven (for more than just 5min) almost every pickup truck known to man, minus the Nissan Titan & Ford Raptor.

Toyota has the best of everything. Good looks, good "performance", great reliability, #1 resale value of ANY truck/suv. All very important selling points to most of the truck market.

Toyota will keep the same Tacoma for another 2 years or so. They normally change up about every 4. So if Toyota goes diesel or even thinks about it, it won't be until a newer body style. So probably 2016 with bold new look or maybe an actual body change since they went from the early pickup up to 95, then the tacoma 95.5-04 (1st gens), and then newer tacoma (2nd gens) from 05-present.

To be honest GM has gone in the right direction With making the Colorado a mini Silverado. It really will appeal to the uninformed buyers who will leave Toyota and go to gm

302hp 275tq This should be a pretty fun truck to drive. Throw a supercharger on it and this thing will be an absolute beast!

I can't say that I'm not interested in the new truck. I just hate the fact that is a GM. The whole bailout thing doesn't sit well with me. They were a global company and I didn't see why the US wanted to lend the money. But, as far as I know, they have paid everything back to the US.

To me, I'm usually brand loyal so what GM does doesn't impact my decision.

GM impacted my decision all by themselves to not drive GM after 22 years. My 06 Colorado had the famed head failure (Google it). 2 dealers lied to my face numerous times and so did the corporate office. Ends up a "free" repair cost me about 2 grand out of pocket and everyone says the other one did it. The main office even agreed that the dealers lied to me, knew about the warranty, and that others have had all the other parts fail that mine had..yet said they were not going to help me.

Meantime Toyota gave my wife about 10 grand for her 96 Tacoma and hooked her up with a rental and discount on her 05 Rav4 when her Tacoma was 13 yrs old. Hmm...wonder who I'll buy from?

If GM is offering a turbo diesel in the second year of production like they said, then maybe Toyota will get their diesel emissions to work over here and put it in the Tacoma.

We have a few Colorado's as transfer vehicles for work and i can say from personal experience that it wont be hard to improve on there current model. They are the Z71 models and they cant handle any mud, washboards, or more than 2 guys with any amount of gear. also the fuel economy on them is worse than the 2500's we run.
they really don't have to go that far to start improving on what they have got.

One of the best insightful posts right there ^^^. Complacency is a killer. Yes, I do realize that Toyota is staying ahead of the game, and HAS stayed ahead. But for those who make the comment that Toyota shouldn't care or shouldn't take notice, are wrong. A diesel option? Sure, we have a large group of people here, but we are the minority on Tacoma ownership in the US, and worldwide. I mean we have what, less than 1% of the entire Tacoma owners here? Sure, we all have our valid points, but when you think about it, the REASON so many of us have been here for such a long time, is we have similar grouped interests in our trucks. That doesn't mean that OUR beliefs are the same as every other truck owner, or future owner. Hell, I have personally heard several of my customers say the Tacoma is ugly. Well, they are entitled to their opinion. If EVERYONE liked the same look, then every truck would look exactly the same. There WILL be a market for this Colorado. These few features alone are interesting:

    • Standard CornerStep rear bumper design ( I really like this! Imagine a Tacoma that is lifted, but has an easier way to get into the bed!)
    • Available EZ Lift-and-Lower tailgate
    • Standard two-tier loading that allows a platform to effectively split the bed into upper and lower sections, making it easier to haul, store and conceal items such as tools (I like this as well! Smart idea)
    • Thirteen standard tie-down locations throughout the bed for use with available, movable cargo tie-down rings (Yeah, you carry stuff in the bed enough, you will notice that the Tacoma could sure use a few extra tie downs)
    • Standard bed rail and tailgate protectors
    • Available factory-installed spray-in bed liner
Sure, SOME people might not care about this stuff, but I am willing to bet that there are plenty who WILL look at this. Especially the diesel option. And face it, I would LOVE to see a Tacoma with 300HP that is not supercharged. That is almost 70 horsepower more than the 4.0 puts out. Some people ARE going to take notice.

And that sir, is a matter of opinion. But you misunderstand the idea behind this forum. It is for Tacoma ENTHUSIASTS to gather and discuss ANYTHING they desire, not just the Tacoma. You don't like the thread, don't read the dang thing! Or if you are so elitist, go buy your own server and make your own forum where ALL you talk about is the Tacoma.

Yeah, I agree that the HP rating will be impressive. I haven't seen any numbers on fuel economy. THAT will make a big difference. If they can beat the Tacoma economy, and still have that impressive of a HP rating, they will definitely garner a market share on that one.

This whole thing brings out one of the most common things I have ever mentioned when it comes to different brands. For every Toyota owner that you introduce me to that will NEVER own a GM because their last "x" number of GM vehicles sucked, I will show you a GM owner who will never own a Toyota because the last "x" number of THEM he owned sucked. For every Ford owner with the same thing to say about Dodge, I will show you a dodge owner who feels the same way about Ford.

YES, Toyota does in general build very great automobiles, but there are still people who are just as closed minded as others HERE, that refuse to buy something simply based on what they owned in the past. My first Toyota truck was a 1996 Pickup. That thing had so many problems I spent more time working on it than driving it! I swore I would never own another Toyota truck again. Fast forward to now, and I own a Tacoma, and love it. Products change over the years. New management and new designers lead companies in new directions.

As for the bailout from the Govt. You guys just don't see the big picture. Think about the ENTIRE market in the US. Businesses AND employment. If GM were to actually go bankrupt, think how many employees would be unemployed. Now look at the REST of the results. GM goes under, now Delphi is out of their major contract. Delphi goes under, and THEIR employees are now out of a job. Isuzu looses out now on the huge diesel market because they supplied all of the Duramax diesels. Cutbacks there result in MORE job loss. Think about EVERY SINGLE company that does the majority of their business with GM. Look at each one that relies on GM being up and running for THEM to stay in business. Now imagine every one of those companies having to either close, or do serious cutbacks because of the closing of GM. The government didn't screw their citizens over by giving GM a bailout, they saved this country from potential financial RUIN by bailing out GM.

honestly the "Reliability" excuse used by Toyota owners is equivalent to the race card used by minorities. Sure, GM made some really shitty cars in the 70s. But in today's age it's a different story. My dad's 1500 is an 01 with 176,000 miles and has never had a thing go wrong with it

    +1

Example: look in the CR reliability surveys. The Tacoma has a predicted reliability of 'average' and is the least reliable vehicle Toyota manufactures, period. All GM would have to do is a little better than industry average reliability and they will have the Tacoma beat.

Yes! Some of guys can rail on about diesel fappers all they want but I'm going to have one, whether its Chevy, Toyota, or whoever. Just a matter of time and making my '05 Taco last until then which shouldn't be a problem. If Toyota brings out a 2016 diesel Taco, then great, I'll be at the front of the line.

Holden of Australia makes the twin of the new Colorado with the 2.8l Duramax.

They are advertising 29 mpg! That's almost double what I get now.

CR predicted the Colorado as the same for the earlier years. Ask me how that worked when mine needed 5 grand of engine work with 78k.

They also predicted the old Chevy Citation as junk and my dad ran his to nearly 200k.

Yep. My point exactly. These are ALL mass production vehicles. There WILL be problem cars, and there will be cars that run 500k. We had a customer at my old dealership that had 1 MILLION miles recorded, AstroVan! Documented. Well taken care of, only only had the engine replaced once, and the transmission twice. That is a million miles there.
