Just something everyone around here always does... no matter what kind of vehicle they are driving. The fact that Toyota is known to have frame rust issues is just more reason to get it done. $100.00 a year doesnt seem like a high price to avoid serious issues in the future.

I went with the dealer under coating from auto armor. only because they gave a written guarantee for 10 years against any rust.

This is why I started using Fluid Film on my truck this year. I am hopeful that it will save mine from failing. My frame looks similar to some of the pictures posted. Its amazing to me that the truck looks great except for the frame.

I hope that Toyota does something about this, but if they don't IMO the only way to go is some type of yearly oil treatment.

Fair enough, it is pretty ridiculous that they rust to the extent that they do. With the amount of salt they put down in my area though, Id be afraid to drive any vehicle without rust protection. It snowed for about 5 mins they other day, and there was piles of salt on the road for a week.

I'm trying fluid film for the first time also.
Scraping and painting every year is a real pain in the ass and is like putting a band aid on a bullet wound. I used about 6.5 cans

Another problem is if you start scrapping and painting then if anything serious happens they will be sure to deny you for "altering the protection". Your damned if you do, damned if you dont.

Went to the dealership this morning and the service advisor and shop foreman were both out on vaca. Spoke to the service manager that is making phone calls as we speak and supposed to hear back from him soon.

Update- I spoke to my service manager and he said that the regional toyota rep wasn't even interested in looking at pictures or the report. He told me the only other thing I can do is pester the customer service reps. I called and immediately asked to speak to someone above the CS rep. But instead she said she wants them to investigate my claim and had me email pictures to Toyota with my claim number attached. She asked me what action I would like done and I said I would either want a replacement frame or the truck bought from me....there really isn't anything else that will help. She said that she cannot asure me that any action will be taken but she said that someone will atleast look into it this time instead of just taking my complaint just as a logging into the system. She said I would be getting a call with 3 business days with some sort of answer. So I guess I am waiting until Wednesday to hear something. Did see another post on hear just posted this afternoon about another 2005 getting a replacement frame. He also said that Toyota said that there is eventually going to be a recall. I wonder how true that statemnet is?

    justinfisch01-

Just having rust on your frame will not net you a frame swap.

Full rust through needs to be obvious. Surface and deeper rust will not do anything to get toyotas action, you will need a full hole that was not made by the factory.

Even with a hole in your frame due to rust will take a good amount of effort for them to replace.

I have rust all over mine but know there is no structural concern so it will not be replaced. Mine is comparable to your trucks condition.

That is like saying you have a chip in your paint and you think your clear coat is going to peel so you want them to repaint the vehicle.

Your first pic shows nothing but surface rust. Same as my whole frame as well. No paint left on my frame anywhere as well.

Your newly added second pic is hard to tell if it is a factory hold rusting around it or if it is rust through since the picture is too close to tell where exactly it is on the frame. I am guessing that is the only angle to get a picture of the hole clearly.

If you look closely at the pic with the hole you can see the chunk of metal that has opened up...it was found by Toyota not me. If you look at some 9 my other picks you will see a shot on the other side where it has not yet broken through the other side. My hole is on the inside of the frame rail right next to the cat. Just like the majority of everyone else's in this thread and the "official 2005+ rust perforation" thread. You think I am making this up???? The cross member drops silver dollar sized chunk regularly. I can't even get the dawn thing aligned if I wanted too.x

Did not state that you were making anything up.

There are some threads with members wanting frames replaced for surface rust. I am aware of the boxed frame section in the cat area that rusts out.

That should set you up to get a frame replacement.

Good luck dealing with Toyota, it is just a run around. I wish that on no one.

As for the alignment there are 2 year old trucks that cannot get alignments without new control arms. It is a joke toyota has not remedied this situation yet.

Mine were seized but my buddy was able to get them to free up after alot of work. He is a tech at toyota and agrees it is a issue.

I plan to sell my truck shortly before my rust gets worst and have to deal with toyota.

Never have had a truck with such rust issues as this one. The frame paint is just a joke.

Best of luck, hope it goes smoothly for you.

Just out of curiosity - those with frames that are in *really* bad shape, i.e. full perforation/compromised structural integrity/candidates for replacement, where does the truck sleep in winter? In a closed garage or out in the open air?

As much as I love the idea of not having to scrape ice, brush snow, and getting into a truck that isn't frozen so stiff that the doors bang like metal on metal on a -34C morning due to the seals being so cold that they don't expand, I also like the idea of keeping my truck COLD through the winter so it doesn't warm up to overnight garage temps around the freezing mark where the salt can do severe harm...

Mine sleeps outside in front of my garage bay. My frame isn't pretty and I've got areas of some interest that I'll continue to drown with Krown and keep my eye on, but it's not nearly as nasty as any of the ones I've seen so far. We get about as much sodium chloride dumped on the roads here as anywhere else (oh, I just love sliding through stop signs on an inch of loose salt over dry pavement with no storm in the forecast...) and I'll be the first to admit that I haven't been an angel in the oil undercoating department, so I'm trying to make a little sense of why some are worse than others I guess.

I am near Chicago so in the winter temps rise during the day above freezing typically and are below it during the night.

So there is a nasty process at hand due to the salt causing rust but as I stated I have not owned any other truck with such a issue that this tacoma has.

There is not a single point where paint still exists on the frame, axle or any cross member.

    My truck is generally outside.

They are replacing mine next week because of this.

The frame has lots of rust everywhere, but this is the worst.

I don't care where you live, a frame shouldn't rot out like these do.

^ wow...looks like right next to the cat and the rust spread and rotted through the bottom of the rail. Seems like quite a few of these popping up lately
