That's just it..it's never going to be an exact science either side..and some people just have preferences. I learned how to work on GM cars so it helped make my choice to drive one.

What drove me away from GM is all the lies and doubletalk they (dealer and corporate) gave me about my 06 Colorado. Had they handled it half as well as Toyota handled my wife's Tacoma buyback, I'd have never left..

I know us guys up north would be alot happier if they just improve the frame. paying 30k or more for a 6 year old throw away truck isnt going to sit well.

I did not know that. How does CR define reliability? Does it at all address longevity?

Also, I wonder what the perceived reliability is between GM and Toyota. I mean, if you surveyed a million people and just asked them which brand has better reliability and longevity would GM really come out on top?

GM invents the 2005 Tacoma in 2015. Just like the 1990 Saturn was the 1980 Toyota. Ho hum!

I'm sorry but I do not see them inventing a 2005 Tacoma here. There are so many differences between the two. If anything, it's more like the Frontier. Boxed frame, all wheel disc, etc... I think it's an excellent re-entry back into the segment!

I think most are intimidated by this new competition. I for one, welcome a "NEW" choice. I sure wished Ford would come back and compete...

They have their similar design cues, but then again the silhouette of a mid-size pickup can only end up a certain amount of ways. Something someone mentioned in a comment at the bottom of the article (and I can't tell by the way) but they say the front end is all one piece (fenders/hood/etc.) so people would have to cut half their bumper off to fit a plate bumper.

Lots of design elements are undoubtedly similar though. Kinda like when you see other designs people have and unintentionally incorporate what you have seen into your design.

Been to Korea lately? If Kia/Hyundai decides to get into the pickup game here, it's going to be game over for everybody.

Toyota's had this market segment pretty much all to themselves for almost a decade. It doesn't have to stay that way.

I work in sales at a Ford dealer. Ford has an awesome Sync and My Ford Touch system. I see them everyday! I love my Tacoma, but I have to admit that one of the disappointing things about my Tacoma was the lack of technology, especially when I am around it all day long. But that is a double edge sword. Keeping technology out of the truck keeps it reliable. I have seen a few Ford's go down because of electronic and / or computer issues. But Ford is also on the cutting edge of this technology, even over Toyota cars, and especially GM cars. GM wants to link their systems extra's to a antiquated Onstar subscription. I sold a used 2012 chevy Cruze the other day and had to help my customer link his phone. I think my son might have made something more sophisticated with his home electronics experiment kit. The GM blue tooth has nothing on Ford. GM is where Ford was 5 years ago!
As far as a GM 3.6 ltr engine, It that might be the same warmed over minivan/ Rendezvous/ Impala engine that was originally based off the 3.4 ltr.
I kinda lust over the upcoming and promised GM diesel engine though. But I have been burned by GM too many times to trust it. (personal and Gm's that I purchased to resell) I would literally lose sleep once it goes out of warranty. It's the same reason GM failed at rear steering on pickup trucks. It was not a bad idea, but nobody trusted GM to get it right without burning the customer for expensive repairs. Been there, done that. I never buy new vehicles anymore because I know the benefits of buying used. But if Toyota came out with a diesel Tacoma - WOW, that would be really hard to resist!

Look on Youtube or Google the current Ford Ranger that is on sale in Australia. If Ford brought that over I would have to take a hard look since I sell Ford's

My friend has two Hyundai's (Sonata & Santa Fe). I was skeptical at first, but we carpool to work as well as hunt and fish together, and I'm quite impressed with the fit, finish, and function of both vehicles. If Hyundai comes out with a truck in 4x4 w/ manual trans, with their 100K mile warranty I'd have to give it some consideration.

I hate to burst your bubble regarding Ford. Ford is on a down hill slide in regards to quality vehicles. Not only are the Eco engines exploding out there but now the transmission in the F-150's are failing. Ford's Sync system may have some great ideas and be on top for technology but the damn thing is so non user friendly.
Why is the Tacoma behind in the technology dept? I don't know, maybe because it's a nine year old platform. Toyota doesn't have to keep re-deploying new platforms every 3 years trying to get it right so customers will buy it.

Next time your at work, walk around to the service dept and look at all the new vehicles in the service drive, parking lot. Then on your way home, swing by a Toyota dealer and do the same. You will be surprised at what you see.

Normally Ford dealers have way more volume than your normal Toyota dealer.

Care link some of your findings about the ecos blowing up and now the transmissions going out?

Yes, Sync was pretty bad when it first came out but now it is smooth sailing.

    Not a problem.

    http://enr.construction.com/product...problems-with-fords-ecoboost-truck-engine.asp

There is even a Facebook page about the problems. http://www.truckinginfo.com/channel...-loss-of-power-in-f-150-ecoboost-engines.aspx

This should get you started. The biggest gripe we have around here is windnoise and a little shudder at take off. Yep, you can keep your every 3 year GM and Ford redesign problems. Have you ever noticed that Toyota and Lexus are usually the last one's to mass produce certain features? It's becuase they test and retest to make sure they have as many bugs worked out as possible.

Almost forgot. This is what Ford would like you to do if your Sync is not working properly. Seems far from smooth sailing to me.
HOW TO HELP RESOLVE BLUETOOTH CONNECTION ISSUES
If your phone isn’t connecting to MyFord Touch properly, try the following steps:
    1. Turn ignition off
    2. Open and close the driver’s door
    3. Wait for MyFord Touch to turn off completely and watch for the clusters to power off
    4. Wait 30 seconds before proceeding
    5. Turn ignition on
    6. Wait for MyFord Touch to turn on completely. Watch for the clusters to power on

I must admit the new Colorado has caught my interest...especially the diesel option. Looking forward to it hitting the dealer's showroom. I know you guys are loyal to Toyota but GM may have hit a home run with this truck.
