    Hey folks,

Just wondering what your thoughts would be on a pure audio system comprised of a Pioneer DEH-P800PRS deck, Pioneer 720PRS speakers for the front and a single JL 10W1V2 for sub duties? Not sure on an amp yet, but I suspect I'd want at least 75w going to the fronts and 200 to the sub.

I'm looking at that deck because of the better DAC's over the over Pioneer decks and the fact that I'd be playing allot of CD's. I DON'T want a stereotypical "boom boom" system. What I do want is a system that puts accurate music reproduction as the primary goal. Natural mids, crisp highs and accurate bass is what I'd be looking for. I'd also likely add some rear speakers for fill, but that wouldn't be a huge priority.

I still need to be able to fold down the back seats so I can't go crazy on a big box. Would that 10 work or would it be more beneficial to maybe drop down to a single 8?

I'm still trying to decide if I want to go down the road of a better system or not and allot will depend on how much dough it would take to get a nice clean music only system.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can throw my way!

p.s. Do the modifications required for a sub box impact the abilty to use the child seat anchors? If so, that would result in the sub not being considered.

That's a good deck and so are the speakers. I think you could do better on the sub though. If you really want crisp clean bass then a DIYMA R12 is your best bet. You can't beat the price on them either.

I kinda wish I had sprung for the DEH-P800 deck instead of the 410UB I just got (haven't installed yet) because of the 24-bit DAC but money kinda tight right now so will just go ahead with what I got. Report back if you get that deck to let us know how you like it. I decided to go with the Image Dynamics XS-69 component speakers since I wasn't going to use a sub so I figured the 6X9's would help out with the bass. Mr Marv indicated those are some really good components and I purchased a set of baffles / mids / tweeters from him. I chose the ARC Audio KS-125 amp which does 70 watts per channel and all reviews have that amp highly recommended plus it is tiny so it will leave plenty of room for the crossovers and amp under the passenger seat.

That head unit and those speakers are top of the line! Even more so if you run the whole setup active (no passive crossovers). At that point all you need is a small 4 channel amp.
If you've got the coin, go with the Arc Audio KS125.4 MINI. If that's a little out of your budget, go with the Sundown Audio SAX-50.4

Could someone explain the difference between passive and active crossovers?

In a passive crossover system you have:
Head unit ----Full Range Source --> amplifier ---> passive crossover ---> tweeter/midwoofer

In an active system like what your gear can do:
Head unit ---High source---> amplifier ---> tweeter
Head unit ---Low source ---> amplifier ---> midwoofer

Basically, you're controlling the crossover points with your head unit (the 800PRS is one of the few that can do this).

Thanks for the feedback folks. If I decide to go ahead, I think I'm set on the P800 and PRS720's. I'd be getting it installed at the shop so I'm sort of restricted to the brands they carry, hence my questions about the JL subs. I did have a look at the 720's and the build quality of them looked just sick. The magnets on them were darn near the size of the entire cone and they weighed a ton. Very impressive driver to handle.

I'm still not sure on the sub though. Any thoughts on a decent 10 vs a higher quality 8? Would a good single 8 properly amped provide enough low end to to make it worthwhile? I'm assuming that an 8 might perform better than a 10 given the size of box that I'd have to contend with but I do plead ignorance on that one.

Thanks again for all of the help!

What other brands does your shop carry? Also, cone size of the drive has nothing to do with frequency reproduction.
But expounding on that, if the space you have available is too small for a 10" driver, a similar 8" driver might do better in the given space.

Hey johnecon2001 just going from memory, I believe they have JL, Pioneer, Alpine, Kicker and MTX. From what I can gather, the box they would need to build to fit behind the back seat would be JUST big enough for a 10, but I'm not sure if it's ideal or not. My buddy has the JL 10W1V2 in his Tacoma (in the same box as what I'd be looking at) and to my ear it sounded like it needed a little more air. It almost sounded too compressed, like it needed to breathe just a little bit more. That could just be that particular sub, the crossover points he was using, etc., though so it's hard to say.

If I can't get a suitable box back there that would blend properly with everything else, I'd also just consider going with the upgraded components in the front and back. I'd rather forgo a the low end extension of a sub and have great sound quality everywhere else, than to ruin the overall balance by forcing a sub into a situation that isn't ideal. I do need the back to still be fully functional, so that's part of my dilema. I actually wonder if the upgraded componets, properly amped of course, would be enough for what I'm looking for.

Thanks for all of your help!

What's the most mounting depth you can fit in your box? Could it fit the 8.6" Alpine Type-X? Since all of your other equipment is on par with an SQ setup, you may as well get a great sounding woofer.
Another excellent option is the JL W6. It's a little more shallow at just under 7".

I'm actually not sure about the mounting depth johnecon2001 but I will talk to them about those. Thanks for your help!

I'll chime in and say that Mr. Marv is building me a box that will sit below the child restraint hooks because I'll need it for my baby girl. So what you want is possible. And since you are going high end SQ, don't be shy and get his box that will fit the JL 13.5 TW thin subwoofer! It's boom boom but it's also a great SQ sub. If not he can get a 10" to fit perfectly as well, you should search his pics and you'll see the custom holes he puts in his boxes/amp racks that allow full use of the child hooks.

He's already thought of everything you desire, he's good like that! ;)

Very cool zero niner, thanks for the info. If and when I take the leap, I may just call Mr. Marv and chat with him a bit. I'm sure I could probably even arrange to have the shop install his box (while getting everything else from them) and that way at least I know I'd have a proven box design going in. And I hear you on the SQ. If I take the leap, I'd rather do it right the first time so the 13.5 is definitely something I'd consider.

Search around, lots of folks have that sub in the double cab and love it, if you can afford it, I'm in agreement, do it right the first time around, no sense you get an 8 or 10 and find out you want more, then have to get a new box and new sub and probably a new amp. Just my thoughts, Marv is very experienced and will gladly chat with you about your system, give him a call, it's the best phone call I bet you'll make!
