Build thread...when truck arrives.

Yeah, I'm impatient...so what.

The build sheet was submitted to the factory, now its just a matter of waiting for the day.

Because I'm impatient, I'm going to start acquiring my parts. I'm using this thread for a few reasons:
1 - to keep track of my ideas and so I dont lose focus
2 - to hopefully get some good opinions from other members if they see something that could be better or whatnot.
3 - and to actually document the build when it starts happening.

This will be continuously evolving as idea may change.

So, here we go...

Coming with:
- TRD exhaust (because I'm lazy) -Scrapped this....getting supercharger-
- Exchanged scooped hood for non scooped
- Exchanged 17" TRD Sport rims for 16" TRD OffRoad rims

Free mods:
- A bunch of them from the list on this site.

Already have:
- 4 PIAA 520 lights
- 1500W pure sine wave inverter
- Ram Mount laptop stand
- Wilson Wireless cell booster
- Motorolla PM series mobile radio
- Glove box/centre console organizer

Stuff on order:
- OME 886 lift with Dakar leafs (because its proven, simple, and effective)
- ARB bumper (because im an ARB fan boy...and its a great product)
- Warn VR8000 with in cab controls (may upgrade to M8000) -went with and XRC8-
- Recovery gear
- Winter Rubber

Stuff being researched for install as soon as truck arrives:
- More fuel...Trooper tank in place of spare tire area (before anyone questions my wanting additional fuel capacity, at -40C take a drive up to Whitehorse or Yellowknife)
- Tundra front brake swap -may have to find another solution-
- Switch centre, relay box, etc.
- Bed cover/secure storage. No clue which direction I'll go with this...its a tough one. Maybe I'll stick with DiamondBack...but that limits me in some ways. -getting a BakFlip right away-
- Roof rack. Likely a BajaRack
- Gearing for front and rear. I wanted 4.11 what that seems to be a lot of hassle...so maybe 4.56
- On-board air. Because I may as well just get it over with.
- Undercarriage protection.
- Dual battery setup
- DT short headers
- y pipe
- Exhaust system
- Snorkel (because its awesome)

Future plans (over the next 12 months)
- Possibly a supercharger. Was going to just save my pennies and do the diesel conversion in the summer...but I dont think so. Not right now anyway. -DONE...I ordered it up-
- Lockers
- Some sort of camping kit...this plays into the bed storage thing a lot.
- 360 degrees of lighting

As you may notice, this daily driver will be performing triple duty. Get me to the grocery store, get me to the remote work sites, get me to my camping destinations.

I need reliability, that cannot be overlooked at all. And it needs to be capable...not rock garden capable, but definitely solo remote overlanding capable.

You are going to have one fun time! Were you seriously considering doing a diesel conversion in the summer?

 

Apparently the older Tundra rotors are just slightly larger diameter, and quite a bit wider, the pads are larger, and the calipers are larger, and everything is a direct, easy swap. We'll see though.

Forster, yes...yes I was. And its still not completely off the table. There are a few things holding me back from it:
1. I have to bring my truck down to Diesel Toys for them to do it, so I lose it for a while. No kit available.
2. They keep my brand new 1GR...which I was going to sell to off set the cost.
3. Warranty...I have 120,000kms of warranty with my truck. This would kinda make that pointless.

Cost didnt bother me too much, as I was figuring about $16,000 for the kit. Sell the brand new motor for $?, sell all the associated bits for $?, not get the Toyota warranty $2100, not get the TRD supercharger $7000. So maybe all in cost would have been 5,000 and a shit pile of work. It was kinda worth it to me, even though most people will tell me I'm nuts for even thinking it. For where I work and the places I travel diesel is a very smart option...everyone has diesel. Its cheaper than regular unleaded in the summer, not much more in the winter, gives me a torque curve that works for my purposes, and on a 4000km trip, the extra fuel economy adds up. I put on around 60k to 100k kms per year. Im expecting my extended warranty to be done in 3 years.

 

I honestly think it would be awesome if you did it. It would be perfect for where you are located way up north, and it does have many pros. As far as the cost, if it is worth it to you and you have the money, then it's not THAT bad. I would love to do it, but I don't have anywhere near the kind of money it would take to get it converted, nor as many reasons to need it, as much as I would want it.

 

Problem is I was fine with a kit option if available...but $25k for for the full swap....geez, I just dont know, you know. Dont get me wrong, they do an unbelievable job with it...but that $25k is a solid number (no engine to sell to recoup cost) plus getting truck down there, going back down to drive her back up, etc...I think what I may do is run the 4.0 until out of warranty (a few years for sure) and then take another serious look at it. Many people are extremely satisfied with their s/c set ups...maybe I will be too.

The other problem with the gas engine is that they seem to burn more when idling (at -30 to -50 we don't really shut our trucks off...that may be a month straight). But...ive heard the new diesels with all the emissions wizardry dont really like idling all the time either.

Anyway, its definitely not off the table, but I'm going to give my 1GR its opportunity to impress the hell outta me

 

Got a picture of her from the dealer. I changed it up quite a bit though...

-Pyrite Mica changed to Awesome Grey (this was actually a huge hold up)
-TRD Sport Premium changed to TRD Sport less premium (didn't really want leather, and I dont hear much good about the factory nav. And this was another big hold up).
-TRD Supercharger paid for and awaiting the fine people at TRD to develop (hopefully it won't be too long...didn't think there were any differences between '13 and '14).

All my other goodies have been ordered.

I may have goofed in my research on this....I dont know if its quite as simple as it was with early Taco's I am fairly certain I will want some additional braking though, I'll continue digging up info.

 

Skip your proposed supercharger. Trucks are utility and not a race car. It cost a ton and affects other components of the vehicle that could be troublesome. Roll that cash over into lockers and your other goodies. But then again if your loaded with cash.....do it.

I wouldn't say rich, but I do put in an a** load of hours every month (around 275) and have been saving away specifically to get the exact truck I want, outfitted exactly how I want. Although the supercharger is not required (I'm sure the 1GR is more than capable to pull my 4000# trailer through mountain passes) I saved for it and I gave up the "premium" package and some other goodies to offset the cost, so in the end I didnt pay much more for the truck than I originally planned, and I have what may work best for me. Its always a give and take with such things. If I do end up locking her it will be a long ways down the road...my intent is overlanding more so than offroading, so my to do list looks vastly different from others. And I'm not looking to build a street fighting 4x4 pick-up or anything like that.

But yes, the price difference I paid would have pretty much covered the price of parts for a regear, lockers, and on board air.

Suspension and winch arrived. Now its just to wait for front bumper and time to actually do stuff.
