Do I need a 4x4??

For a first vehicle im most likely going to buy an Xtra cab taco. For a while I was under the influence that I was going to need a 4x4, but after looking online for a bit I started looking at prerunners because of the insurance and fuel savings.

Im trying to decide between a 98-03 v6 4x4 and a 98-03 v6 prerunner with locking differential.

Where I live I get a few feet of snow in the winter, and I will be going up the ski hill every weekend, thats the extent of driving I'll be doing, no major offroading.

Do you guys think I'll be fine with a prerunner, or should I get the 4x4?

4x4 absolutely, snow and hills in a 2wd are less than pleasant at times where with the 4x4 life is simple. finally got snow here today, needed 4x4 to get out of my driveway that has a slight angle! i've only had one 2wd truck and with good snow tires and weight in the bed behind the axle it was barely acceptable in hilly terrain in my opinion during snowy conditions.

 

'98-'03, insurance difference is going to be minimal.

i used to have a 95 5 lug access cab, and i just recently got my 03 DC 4x4, the only thing i miss about my 95 is the manual trans.

gas mileage with a truck is already going to suck. there's a negligible difference between the prerunner and the 4x4. there isn't much additional maintenance either.

The worst vehicle you can drive in the winter is a 2wd truck. Of course get the 4wd

Here in eastern NC, I rarely use my 4WD (unless I get the chance to go wheeling locally, which is very rare). I have found, however, that when I need my 4WD, I really NEED my 4WD. My first Toyota truck happened to be 4WD, and I WILL NOT go without it. You'd be surprised at the things you can use 4WD for. It really does come in handy for things besides wheeling and inclement weather - so, along with everyone else that has replied, YES, GET THE 4x4!!!!!!

I drive my tacoma through snow in 2wd without an issue never once came close to sliding but I like to have 4x4 on just for safety. What my brother said to me "Its better to have it and not need it then not have it and need it"

 

Snow is not the only reason to have 4WD!

Long answer: I hade a 2007 toyota tacoma prerunner I asked my self the question should I get a 4x4? ended up trading in the truck losing some money for not saying yes in the first place just get it and save yourself some money.
