    How long does it take to smoke a 15 - 20 lb bird?

    For me, it's not the expense so much as the mess they make. Even if you're careful, you end up with a lot of oil splatter. I need to find a good way to protect the ground around the fryer before I attempt one of them at my house.

    Meh. I've had fried turkey before, and didn't think it was any better than properly cooked oven turkey.
    Plus I don't have to worry about giant fireballs with oven turkeys, lol.

    We did an 18lb last year, took about 11 hours i think. We just used one of these real simple basic type smokers[​IMG]

    started the smoker up around 4am, heated it up for about 20 minutes, and threw the turkey on. Might have only taken 10 hours, but it went out twice. When it's cold out you really have to keep an eye on it. Kind of a pain, but fun at the same time and it's awesome when done.

    I did it out back on the cement deck around the pool. I have a funnel and will pour the oil back into the plastic container to be used again. You could probably put down those white oil pads if you think you will be messy but this one didn't make a mess.

    If you want grass the next year, don't do it on the lawn. The grease will kill the grass. Do it on concrete or asphalt. My problem is, I have a small driveway so I have to set something up out back. When I get my fire pit built, I'll set it up there.

    More grass is just more work haha..

    I like the idea of the fire pit. Mine is just a bunch of rocks in a circle, no digging..guess you could get a few slabs and lay them down in a part of the yard too if you got a dark color that didn't show the grease as much

    Why not just lay down a tarp or something and cook on top of it? Put some boards/rocks around the edges to keep it from flapping up and catching on fire if it's windy.
