I have a 2007 Tacoma everything is standard and no modifications are done. If anyone can please give me some suggestions in which in-dash navigations would be best for purchase, I'd greatly appreciate it. The name and brands and what model would help me out tremendously. Thanks fellow Tacoma enthusiast.

I'm in the same boat as you my friend. I have an 08 and looking for a great in dash nav unit myself. So far I'm leaning towards a pioneer in dash with nav Bluetooth etc and just set it all up there. They have a "stock" looking nav system you can buy on ebay but it's like 900 bucks and doesn't even have satellite radio

I have a Kenwood and am very happy with it.
Nav by Garmen, Bluetooth works great, iPod interface is good and the backup camera is much more useful then I thought.
Mine is a DNX 6960 which is a couple of years old, so the processor could be a bit faster.

I would say go play with them in an audio store.

But I would suggest anything with Garmin software would be good. Some of the kenwoods look nice.

    Yes.

My 12 has the entune/navi unit and it sucks. JBL uses the tom tom software and it is partially retarded. I have been thinking of yanking it and putting in something from kenwood.

    +1

Kenwood's safety can be bypassed by simply grounding the e-brake wire.
    Pioneer is more involved.

Another good thing about Garmin software is that the map updates are easy to find on the internet for free.

My buddy had a Lexus RX350, not only does he have to pull over and stop to make a destination change, the maps are over $200 to update and only get updated once a year.

I haven't paid attention to the in-dash units because I mostly use a GPS unit on my motorcycles. Now that I have a Taco and plan to travel in it, I'll be thinking about an in-dash unit. I'm curious about the procedure to update map software in them. How does that work? Just stick a memory card in somewhere?

For the Kenwood Garmin units, correct.
I think that there is a way to permanently copy them to the hard drive, but why bother.
I just plug in the micro SD card and select the updated maps.
    Quick, easy and free.

Nice. Thanks. Interesting that the thing has a hard drive, I wonder whether the newest ones use SSD or something.

Where do you find the maps for free?

Usually from sites like Pirates Bay etc, although to be honest I think the last update I actually paid a guy $10 off of Kijji and he gave me the SD card as well.

I haven't seen an actual hard drive in an in-dash GPS since the Pioneer AVIC-Z series.
Modern units are all solid state. My 6990 is loaded through the USB port from a stick.

Ya know, it's only $100 for lifetime updates from Garmin, and no risk of getting something infected.

im partial to say pioneer. I own an old avic-f900bt, modded with current maps and red light cameras, custom stuff and the ebrake bypass. I love the way it preforms, and the fact CE is the backbone, i can boot it up to look like windows and change stuff at any whim

Hey bro, if you don't mind me asking, how much was the back-up camera and the installation? I'm also interested in installing a back-up camera in my tacoma.

you can buy a cheap china one on ebay. I got one for $4 with free S/H :D

instillation is straight forward, hook up video lead to your head unit and supply power to camera. hardest part is running the wires where you want. lol

The lifetime updates from Garmin don't work on the Kenwood units.

I will change my wording from "hard drive" to "internal memory" as I'm not sure if it is solid state or not.
My point was that you can leave the maps on a micro SD card and not have to load then onto the "internal memory".
