I bet it'll be fine. The fan clutch is pretty aggressive and the cooling system is definitely capable. I knew it was past time to take it off in early summer when my max coolant temp went UP without it. It could be 70F outside and I'd get 190fwt with the block but 194-196fwt without it (and I couldn't hear the whoosh of the fan anymore). The day it came out it was 94F and it peaked at 198fwt climbing a hill on the freeway after an hour or so of driving. (That was the 2/3 block.)

I have a full upper block and one for just the top two openings. I'm considering trying the full upper block as it worked well on the 4.0L in the deep freeze. Either way it's also getting the side blocks for the lower grille again that narrow it up to match the width of the radiator.

It dawned on me a couple days ago I've been forgetting to turn off the heat when I start. Sure enough, with one minute of idle after cold start in 31F air, got on the road, engine got to 180F in just over two miles with open grill. Heck of a lot faster than the 4.0 ever could even with the block.

Thanks for the data. How did you construct the blocks?

Keep in mind, not recommended for automatics unless you have separate trans temp monitoring.

It's easy on the 2nd gen. Remove two screws, pop out two plugs, and the upper grill is out. Then it's just a matter of blocking a couple unseen holes to make the back side's edges into one smooth curve (not difficult, even gorilla tape works well there), and ziptie some coroplast to it. The vertical supports are strong enough to hold it. I covered the face of the coroplast with black gorilla tape and it's essentially invisible.

I must just drive like a maniac. 2010 4x4 access cab 2.7 5 speed Ive never gotten 20mpg out of it. Closest i came was with the stock 245's which was like 19.5. Ive tried granny driving and it didnt seem to help. I do a lot of stop and go city driving as well as highway driving in the 75-80mph range (any slower you get run over here...) so i guess thats why I dont do as good. Oh well ill just settle for the steady 18-19mpg, better than the 8-10 i was getting in my jeep.

18-19 is not bad for large tires on a 4x4 with a lot of stop and go driving.
Stop and go is a killer, even on my 5-lug spinning 215's.
If I never got on the freeway, I wouldn't top 18.

I personally shift between 2200-2500 rpm
2k is a little low for me, and 70 is my max speed on the highway to keep the Rpms below the 2400 range
I have a intake, headers and a straight through exhaust, it helps quite abit
Better flow of air coming in and exhaust going out

Yeah it's annoying to look at the ultragauge on the first leg of my commute and it's sitting pretty at 16-18 mpg when it used to do 20-22 there. Oh well, the 4.0L would read 11-13 at that point in the winter.

Having a tough time keeping the meter above 22 avg this tank. I had three days with 20+ mph headwinds so far (Monday was 25 gusting to 40, sometimes it got up to 18-19 mpg going downhill). It came off of full at 55 miles and passed 3/4 at 93 miles, but it waited until 190 miles until half. Who knows, maybe the sender's sick. Don't trust the gauge.

I need to get that grill block in.

I've experienced about the same thing recently in Minneapolis. About 2 to 2.5 mpg drop from normal summer temps. Getting 20 to 20.5 mpg on my standard work route now.

Once the truck warms up, I'm seeing intake temps 20-30F warmer than ambient. So this translates to temps around 60-80F through the intake. Even running leaner than I otherwise would be without the WAI, averaging above 22 MPGs is a tough challenge. I'm thinking about a few mod's to get the engine warmed up quicker and get the intake air up a few more degrees. But the point of it may be moot: cold air and winter blend are tough to beat.

I'm also wondering what the % of ethanol is since the switch. I've heard the summer fuel is a blend here in the NE as well. The pumps have the ethanol sticker attached - assumed it was for the winter fuel only though.

I'm not a big fan of ethanol, and the higher the percent of ethanol, the lower the fuel mileage.

17F degrees the other morning - low 20s tomorrow. Hoping to keep it above 21 MPGs.

It was 17F here this morning too. The tranny doesn't like it.

Then we got ice this afternoon. Traffic limited to 40 mph means even though I'm already 8 gallons in, the tank avg on the gauge still rose six tenths in 22 miles. Unfortunately I'll probably burn half my savings off starting it up tomorrow morning.

Lately, I have had the chance to work at a jobsite that is approximately 77 miles away. My past 4 tanks consist of 85-90% highway miles, cruising at 70-80 MPH with some stop and go traffic thrown in. I have been getting 27-28 mpg, barely approaching WorthyWads territory. I might be able to do better if I reduce my cruising speed, but I've been working 10-11 hour days, and I just want to get home as quickly as I can so I can get some sleep! Very happy with my recent MPG results, especially with the cold morning starts.

LOL - that's the truth of it!! I note that I get to about 176F at about 3 miles and 180F+ at about 7 miles. That stretch really takes a bite out of the MPGs. If I can creep up the back hill (no traffic ever), I can hit my waypoints at about +10% more fuel consumed. Using the usual route, I'm +15% or more. All of the fluids are thick and sticky. Roll distances are drastically down. Today I averaged about 21 MPGs on the ride in (up hill and morning chill/cold to contend with). It'll take some work to get 23 on the ride home to get a 22 MPG average. But that's the challenge!!

FWIW: the intake temps have been averaging +30F with the current location (next to the exhaust manifold). I've seen a few over 40F on the ride home when it warms up here a bit.
