Removing the valve covers and showing you the upper valve train doesn't prove squat. Sounds like the guy is trying to blow smoke you-know-where.

Late to the dance. Already mentioned. lol

I would like to see documentation supporting that. All of my info says the 1GR-FE is a non-interference engine.

Hm. I am looking at it right now for the 2005 1GR-FE engine (OP has a 2005 according to information) and the Toyota repair procedure says nothing about it being an interference engine. It says "NOTICE: Keep the camshaft level while it is being removed. The camshaft thrust clearance is very small and failing to keep it level could crack or damage the cylinder head journal surface, which receives the thrust. This could subsequently lead the camshaft to seize or break. Perform the following steps to avoid such problems" but that has nothing to do with valve/piston interference. It has to do with the camshaft thrust clearance and bearing caps.

Interesting that there has been more than one engine rebuild that has resulted in a timing chain being broken. I am curious. Chains do not normally just "break" like that. I am beginning to think that perhaps inferior brands are being used, instead of Toyota brand in this case?

OK, I found this information on replacing the cylinder head. This does verify that the engine is in fact an interference engine as Toyotacerttech has indicated! I always like to see something in print before blindly accepting it. And here it is. A notice when replacing the cylinder head during an engine rebuild.

"NOTICE: Installing the crankshaft at the wrong angle could cause the piston head and valve head to come into contact with each other when installing the camshaft. This could cause damage, so always set the crankshaft at the correct angle."

this is now a major failure, I would be leaning towards something not installed properly with the rebuild, these engines are fairly stout...

Many years ago I had an engine rebuilt with a local reputable and recommended shop (VW scirroco, circa 1979 or so), took it for a spin and it dropped a valve within the first 5 miles because one of the valve retainer clip popped loose (improperly installed), had it towed back, shop rebuilt it a second time, no problems on the second go round...it ate up a piston too...

Sometimes shiza happens, hopefully he will pick up the tab on everything...

    OP what was being rebuilt?

It's not like you can easily 'rebuild' these engines. I got a new to me used low mile engine for much less than a rebuild would cost from a reputable engine shop. Just wondering how this all started off.

Well, I head a blown head gasket the first time at 185K miles. Then let the mechanic take it from there. It was a reputable shop, until my chain snapped... He's picking up the tab for sure, its under his warranty. But, it seems like I should just sell this truck or get a new engine. I have so much coin invested into the dam beast...

So he replaced the head gasket and it's their fault for the timing chain?

FYI I found my engine for $1,250.00 and it has LOW miles on it. Transporting it across country + finders fee's I gave to the member who found it made it about a 2k purchase.

    Too few to list.
So normally the 1GR-FE engine is a non-interference engine BUT if you install the crankshaft incorrectly then the valves and pistons can come into contact, correct?

So basically if you've never messed with the crankshaft to begin with on a non-rebuilt engine and your chain breaks, there should be no valve/piston contact.

I would almost always prefer this route because most of the time it's always cheaper than rebuilding one and if not done correctly this happens. Also Toyota heads always calls for a super smooth mating surface for the head gaskets that not a normal machine shop can provide.
