And that is in keeping with Toyota standard practice.

For the most part, chains go into interference engines and belts go into non-interference engines. Some exceptions, such as the 4.7, but that is a Lexus design so a smooth, quiet engine was a requirement.

Honda is really bad about putting belts into interference engines.

The definition of a non-interference engine is one where the camshaft can be rotated with a piston at TDC and not make contact.

No engine "interferes" when the camshaft is installed properly oriented with the crank, though some engines may make contact when run to RPM levels above their design due to rod stretch.

    See above.

No it's not normally a non interference engine. The definition of the non interference engine and interference engine is that in a non interference engine with the crankshaft spinning there is enough clearance between the valves and piston if the camshaft stops spinning. In an interference engine However, interference engines usually sustain damage if synchronization between the crankshaft and camshaft(s) is lost allowing the piston and valve to collide causing damage and most likely very expensive repairs for the vehicle owner.

The 1GR-FE is classified as a interference engine and if the timing chain breaks and the crankshaft is still moving then pistons are coming in contact with valves in one or more cylinders.

Thank you. At least it's chain driven. I have not seen a broken chain under 180K miles. Honda on the other hand is a different story with their belts.

dont get down on your self man. I just rebuilt my engine at 250,000. then spent a couple more times taking it in and out to fix oil leaks and such. Now i broke the end off my crank and just pulled it again and a nother $1000 in parts and now it is coming out again tomorrow morning to fix some other problems that were not caught before. I will never sell my truck though because of it....

When I get my truck back, I will decide if its worth keeping. I don't wan't to keep forking out money to fix problems that was not my doing. Plus, since it's a 2005, I've been thinking about the rusted frames that some TW members here has encountered. I think I might just sell it and save up for a new Tacoma. THanks for your guys insight and suggestions, and happy Thanksgiving :)

San Jose California? I don't think you need to worry about rust unless you live right on the water or trailer a boat to a salt-water marina.

Worst we get is some light surface rust... if they aren't salting the roads, your frame will last just fine.

Update: Passenger side valves are bent. Mechanic is replacing the whole head on the passenger side.
