Ok. Dropped it off for an LOF. I told then my RF cv is torn, and my carrier is bad. I also asked them to check the drums. All said and done $23 and the quoted parts and labor for the above parts.

Fast forward to 6:30pm I'm at home rotating my tires. I notice the right front wheel has play. At 3:00 and 9:00 positions meaning bad inner tie rod end, also noted a wondering truck on the road.

So here is my question. They did a check list and said my suspension and steering was tight. Can I take it back to them and they suck up the bill because they Said it was fine and it's trash. This happens at my work and they replace for free.

I'm an ASE tech but do not want to work on my truck on my week off.

simple answer, no, if they didn't replace any parts they have nothing to warranty. I would be taking it to a different dealer..maybe you can get a refund of the $23 if you complain...but I doubt it...worth a try...

Edit: as far as it being an inner tie rod, yes, it could be, but other possibilities include outer tie rod, bad wheel bearing, soft steering rack bushings, just to name a few off the top of my head, these are things you could have checked yourself before taking it in...

I see no reason why any shop anywhere (including yours) would cover what you describe. why would you even take it someplace if you are going to inspect everything afterwards anyway. Besides, it was either a high school kid that doesn't even know what he is doing, or a flat rate guy who is getting paid 0.3 hrs to do an oil change and can't be bothered going through your truck with a fine tooth comb.

If you are a tech then do the work yourself. the end.

You take it there, they say there's nothing wrong, so you want to bring it back and make them fix it for free?

    Uh, no.

Spend the $50 or whatever on parts and take 30 minutes and do it yourself. Tie rod ends are not exactly difficult on these trucks. Also, what bdegle said.

I inspect the work done if I take it somewhere also. Frankly, I think you'd be silly not to these days.

Dave, best case, if I asked them to go through the truck because it was wandering and they missed the tie rod that was noticable bad, I'd take it back and respectfully give the service manager some shit. I do not and would not expect them to fix it for free but you might get a discount for the inconvenience of having to bring it back a second time.

I'm here now. I've got a free rental at this point. It's hard for me to explain to them with not going into detail. I diag'd it last night I know what's wrong with it. And they said my cv boot is ripped and if your looking at that you should check play. I always do when a car is up check the front it takes seconds. ehemejy4_d6848431985f38e30de1eec14133869d9951ce02.jpg

This tech did the check point because I had no clue my bulbs were out. I think it's on them. Lol I've had something like this fall on me at work. And we sucked up the bill.

There is no way a dealership is going to "suck up" the cost of a tie-rod end or perhaps steering rack bushings, depending on the failure. Any shop that does has a heck of a lot of money to play with. Another supporting thing for them not just fixing it for free is that you came in, got an estimate for brakes and a CV boot, as well as a carrier bearing, then left without getting any of that work done. Now if it were my shop, and you approved the CV boot and brake repairs, as well as the carrier, and my tech missed a bad tie-rod, then yeah, I would go ahead and fix it then for you for perhaps the cost of the part, and I would do the labor and alignment for free. As a fellow ASE tech, you should know that not every wrench turner that does inspections and oil changes are ASE certified (however ASE is now offering ASE certifications for "Maintenance techs" starting this year) and that they will only do so much. Sure, I agree that the tech dropped the ball for missing a loose tie rod, but the REAL question is the "multi-point checklist". It says a multi-point inspection was done, but there is no checklist for what a multi-point covers. It could be something as simple as inspecting the lubrication points, tire wear, break wear, lights and safety components. If that is the case, then a tie-rod would not fall within their "multi-point" inspection list.

Sounds to me like you are trying to get something for nothing because they didnt go over your truck with a fine toothed comb during an oil change.

The dealer has been screwing with me too and they told me my driver side inner tie rod failed in a multi-point inspection and quoted me like $450 to replace but ended up screwing up and ordered a driver side outer tie rod! So after a heated argument and they wouldn't man up to say that they screwed up I just when to Autozone and bought two new inner for like $60 that are made in Japan. I replaced them and come to find out its not the inner tie rods but the steering rack guide! So I have come to the conclusion that I think the dealer doesn't even know they are doing sometimes.

Pretty sure they aren't even remotely screwing you. It's your truck with failing parts, YOU need to pay for it, even if they didn't spot it on an inspection.

If there is something more than that - Then your explanation doesn't make it clear.

    Yeah.
If they said they did the work and you found that the didn't, or didn't do it correctly, that would be one thing. Missing something on an inspection wouldn't give you the right to free work. It would tell me to go somewhere else, though.

That's an expensive carrier bearing replacement. And brake job. And CV axle. Geez, I could do all that in a weekend for under $500 total.

I lol'd so hard @ the dealer wanting $1700 to replace Maybe ~250 dollars in parts, and a turn/reshoe of a rear brake. That's astounding.

I'm pretty happy with what happens at the dealer but also pretty annoyed. I'll post the video in the morning. I was given a loaner car so I could go to a class. I was called around 4 so I headed on down. They found nothing wrong with the truck other that my sway bar is disconnected and that may cause the wondering, and it'll be $410 to fix. This is where I asked them to put it on the lift to show them what I saw. Showed them and the SM asked the tech to go to his office. Fast forward the SM told me there is no way to get my truck in for repair until Friday (not happening I need it done now) I asked if they could get napa parts as they don't have any. I told them a tech and then asked if they could pay for parts and I'll take care of the repair at home. They agreed. Free parts, Free Matrix for the day and a good night in the garage.

There are so many wrong things going on here, the OP sez he is a certified ASE tech (Dent King for a handle, body tech?)and doesn't even have any idea what was wrong with his suspension, sway bar disconnected? Come on.... simple visual would have caught that...now they are giving you free parts, doesn't make any sense whatsoever...as far as the tie rods go, inner or outer or both, I would rather install those than a center support bearing.

The repair estimate is evidence of how Stealerships make $$$, it alone scares the hell out of my wallet...

I really don't want to keep posting on this stupid thread, but theres something about you i just don't like. you remind of the typical douchebag who comes into shops looking to see what they can get for free. Yes i'm an ASE tech too, if you haven't realized that. And i'm starting to think you aren't at all.

There is much that i want to say, but i will summarize it with I think your story is BS first of all. if it is legit, the dealer that you screwed over is top notch for even being willing to do that, and you are a D-bag who gives techs a bad name.

Your a fucking moron. No shit the end links are gone I took them off. I took it there because I have shit going on this week and just don't want to deal with it. If you want to start issues on my automotive career go a head you prick bag. But hey I got free inner and out tie rod that's all not the rest. Why would you rather do tie rods than the center support bearing? I don't mind either, driveshaft is annoying holding it yup and turning to find bolts. But yes free tie rods and I fixed it already. The CV will stay ripped till I can find an old one and go use my warranty for the one that's currently in my truck (Advanced Auto) the lift is coming off soon then bye bye bye Toyota.
