285/70-17 Spare Tire Mod for 2013 Tacoma

Here's what I did to fit my 33" tire under the bed of my 2013 DCLB. (Note: Tapatalk might not display this correctly. It leaves out text between pictures).

Tools needed:
Dead-blow hammer
Various pry bars





I started to cut out the driver side tire locator tab; then realized that I could just bend both tabs. The dead-blow hammer made easy work out of it. I bent them out about 1" - 1 1/2". Leaving these tabs in place; keeps the spare pushed back against the hitch receiver and away from the rear diff. (I painted my grinder marks later).

In test fitting the tire, I found that the tire was hard up against the driver's side spring perch and my TRD exhaust; like others have experienced and was expected. While this is not a big problem, I still wanted a little bit of space between the tire and tail pipe. So I used various pry bars; and re-located my exhaust hangers about an inch. Removing the rubber hangers on either side of the muffler made things much easier. I chose not to bend the rear most hanger; it didn't seem necessary. I found this process very easy to do; and bending the hangers in front & behind the muffler only took about 20 minutes. This resulted in moving the tail pipe out to the side about an inch; and gave me great clearance.

The tire isn't quite level because the spare crossmember curves down as it approaches the driver side spring perch. I don't care - it's out of my bed!

 

I just cut everything off with a grinder and cutting wheel. Running 33/12.5/17 and fits up nice and not cockeyed either.... Looks good though

 

Looks good. I like the idea of still having the locater tabs keeping things tight.

 

The tabs bend really easy. I might bend he passenger side a little more - allowing the spare to shift over a little more and level out. Although it's not noticeable unless your laying on the ground. Haha.

 

I used a ratchet strap to keep my 33" tire as close to the hitch as possible, it moves all over the place when you drive, and I didnt want it to hit the diff.

 

That's what I was worried about. Hearing this makes me glad that I left the tabs on.

 

I went with the precise, scientific method, and used a sledge to hammer the shit out of the tabs. I am not running a spare as big as yours (32"), but if you do it right, you can hammer the tabs into the cross member so that they are flush. I would have cut, but I didn't have anything to cut with.

 

Hammering is faster then cutting. Nice work!

Quick and Easy. Gets that 33" stuffed under there!

 

My stock tire fits fine, but I'm going to go ahead and do this because it involves a hammer.. and maybe a powertool if I want.

 

35's won't fit under there... It'll rub on the diff and hit the bumper

 

I was thinking something a bit bigger like these..

but 35s might do also.

 

That's why you should mount it on the front bumper and grill..

 

I prefer the hood mounted method myself

 

Yeah there's just not enough room under there for 35s. If you do a lot of wheeling though, then you'll want it elsewhere anyway - not trapped under. Lol. High lift in the mud to get the spare out

 

Subbed! Ill find out if this works for a 285/75 mt/r wrangler this weekend. My family keeps telling me I don't need full spare, but they've never ripped out a sidewall dead Center of a 50 mile trail with 140 miles to the nearest tire shop!

 

285/75-16 ? Yep - that will fit.

This trick WILL NOT WORK
With
285/75/r16 wrangler MT/R with Kevlar.
Perhaps with a less aggressive tire you'd clear another 3/4 inch & be a little safer, but for me it's a no go.

Even all the way up there, brackets tweaked & exhaust moved over, it hits the hitch brace tube thing and the rear diff at the same time.
It actually rubbed bad & got wedged up under there after driving around for a bit- had to yank it down out of that spot.
Lucky for me, I've got a nice spot on my roof rack for it.


Then again......

This may be another symptom of my stupid goddamn f**d up Deaver leaf pack I need to return with a heavy pimp hand.
Haven't measured yet, but I think my rear axle is positioned out of spec & not squared up, among many other problems...
