I have been wanting a 45/70 for awhile. There was a 45/70 REVOLVER for sale on Gunbroker awhile back. 6 shots. Made to handle full pressure loads! Can you imagine?

Found out my wife bought me a decent safe for Christmas. She had to tell me because she needs me to go pick it up with the truck

It's big enough for all my guns and ammo with some room to grow.

I shot the magnum research 45/70 pistol, not with hot loads, and it still kicked like a mule. After that experience i decide that was just not the hunting sidearm i would want. Now the Alaskan in 44 mag is a nice piece.

I am a lever action guy and my collection is growing. The new GBL is going to get a wild west guns happy trigger kit, bear proof ejector, aluminum mag follower, brass peep sights and a 4" pic rail that will have a quickly removable tiny Burris red dot. I know , a red dot on a lever gun is not the norm, but i want to give it a try. Pig hunting with the 45/70 is a 100 yard shot or less and the red dot should be fine. i hope. I wanted a SBL, but could not find a new one in over a year, so i gave in for the GBL. Almost went with a Browning Bar, but they are a bit spendy.
Anyway, lever action for the win

All you AR guys should give a lever gun a try, they are fun guns that pack one hell of a wollop. The 45/70 can kill anything that moves in North America.

Correction, a 45/70 can kill most anything that moves on the planet with the right bullet.

    My AR15 w/accessories = 9.7 lbs empty
    w/30 round mag = 10.9 lbs
    w100 round mag = 13.0 lbs

I would say it isn't ridiculously heavy. I bought it for "coolness" and "fun" and because I don't live in a communist state that says I can't. It will get lighter with usage especially while rabbit hunting in my favorite heavy populated spot.

That's over 2lbs or nearly 20% heavier... you say you don't notice that? I know guys paying top dollar to shave ounces here and there (especially forward of center) and 2lbs is a significant amount of weight. I'm not saying you shouldn't own it but I question how 'not heavy' it is. In my experience they were stupid heavy for anything more than popping it into a rifle to snap a picture of but that's just me. It also maintains most of the issues that come with the standard GI style mags with none of the price savings. For my money it doesn't get better than Pmags. So by all means, own them... I do. Just don't try to convince the rest of us that they're light. ;)

Where did I say it was "light". I said it wasn't as heavy as I thought it would be. That all. I didn't put that much thought into it. I own 12 30 rnd mags so it's not like I really needed it. Let me spend my money how I want.

That's twice now you've said that. Still haven't figured out why you're so convinced I'm trying to say you can't have it.

    Careful with that Independence.
I bought 1000 rounds of .45 a few years ago and about 2-5% so far have been like this....
I saved the worst examples, but quite a few were short... I would not trust the pressure on these.

^ Yikes! That could be pretty dangerous pressure levels most likely.

I've got a few thousand rounds of their 5.56mm w/o issue but I know the wing that produces the 5.56mm is scrutinized closely because they actually supply the Israeli military/special forces (IDF) so I they're pretty particular about it. Not sure on the .45ACP though.

In fairness, a few of the rounds were at the edges of the trays, so they could have been compressed during shipping and handling, but not all of them were.
Some were from a few rows in, and all were without compressed rounds near them.

I don't mic them before loading in the mag... the longer of the two above actually went in and I can't say that I hadn't already fired any at that level, but when I saw one that was worse, I rechecked the rest of the mag and found the other one... decided to pull it to be safe.

    It's Blazer brass.

My rounds look like the longer one with some bullets. Just depends on the design. You're right about pressure variations between long and short loads with the same powder, but I doubt that longer one is shorter than minimum COAL.

Okay, you made me mic 'em.

    1.220
    1.140

1.275 is nominal, so this one is .055 short. What's minimum?

I dunno. A quick look at the web shows guys loading as short as 1.20" but going below that sounds really short. Of course, variances in length in the same box are a bad thing and you did exactly right by omitting them.

I'll have to go mic one of mine - I'm curious now.
