Yeah, I went to school at Plattsburgh as well. I graduated in 2001 and still live here. Best bet is to stay off the roads when they are just a sheet of ice...hahaha

Had the same storm come through here obviously.

Have General Grabber AT2s on, 2WD with no weight on rear axle was bad. Fishtailed going down a hill when I hit a patch of slippery shit. 4WD was no problem at all even on some pretty bad roads with a bad slush/ice mix.

You pay to have the ADVANTAGE of 4WD... Why is there ANY hesitation to use it on low traction conditions??? Slippery or loose surfaces is where you want to out shine the 2WD masses... It doesn't have to be off highway to use 4WD, just not on dry highways.

We have a Scion Xb it has snow tires not all seasons real snow tires with little pictures of the mountains on them. The Taco has snow tires also with the little picture of the mountains on them if you live in snow country that is what you need. Your traction control should have been complaining unless you turned it off. Despite what some will tell you it will not trash your 4 wheel system if you all of a sudden hit a patch of dry pavement or drive on it for miles but you may save your back side if you suddenly hit a patch of black ice. You bought a truck with 4 wheel drive use it, a pickup in 2 wheel drive are all most worthless when it's slick does not matter who made it.

I've been on this forum for 18 months, and these type of threads have popped up about 6 times. I have to say you're a crappy driver if you can't control the Tacoma in the snow. I went through a winter in Colorado with the stock Dunlop 245's and didn't have a problem. Drove from Pennsylvania back to Colorado over the Christmas holiday last year with the stock Dunlop 245's in a massive snowstorm, no problem.

And I was moving, I was the fastest vehicle on the road. Why? Because I know how to drive in the snow. I keep it in a lower gear downhill so I have engine braking, I anticipate and feather the brakes so I don't get the ABS kicking in, I pop the clutch in when it starts to slide so the engine doesn't keep pushing me forward when I'm trying to slow down. I keep it in a higher gear on flats or going uphill so I don't get torque slides accelerating.

I go into corners slow then accelerate appropriately out of the corner, all this is Driving 101. I had the Leer shell on for added weight on the rear, but you sure don't drive in the snow in 2WD. The back end is gonna kick out sure as hell and taxes, even in 4HI, unless you have some massive weight back there. And even if you do have massive weight if you don't know your truck that extra weight can really throw the back end out bad at times if you let it get into a slide too much. It get's hard to recover from.

As people have said, KNOW. . . YOUR. . . TRUCK. Test it out, see how it handles in a safe place like a parking lot.

Find out how it handles going into a corner in 4WD. It will try to push through the corner unless you pop the clutch in or pop it into neutral I guarantee you, that's the nature of the beast.

You just have to know how to drive the dang truck.

Worked out OK for me so far. And I do live in Colorado. I've seen you say since you slapped your lift on it kind of fooled up your VSC, so your opinion has to be taken with a grain of salt. I went with the Toyota approved Baja suspension setup, so far, so good.

The truck did fine before with the stock setup, and I haven't noticed anything detrimental since with the Baja setup.

Just out of curiosity why would you turn off your abs? I understand traction control but why turn off the computer that can respond to what the wheels are doing 1000x faster than a human ever could?

There is certainly a longer stopping distance with ABS, I tested it out, no doubt about it.

You get control with ABS, you don't get tire lockup, but a longer stopping distance. You have to test it for yourself and see what you think about it, on or off.

Pull that 30 amp fuse in the underhood fuse box by the driver wheel well, it's clearly marked on the fuse panel, then test it.

Turning off ABS will shorten your stopping distances on loose traction surfaces like snow

Hrmm.. maybe it's if you don't have the TSB springs? I swear I saw something on here about the 3leafs are like 300lbs less.

Max payload includes everything else too, passengers, fuel, cargo.

My truck rides like shit on any sort of bumpy road, hitting bump stops pretty regularly. Almost as bad when I have 4 adults in it.
