I was just letting you know you might be liable in an accident if someone in your truck or the other vehical got hurt or killed. If the investigation found that you permantly disabled all the vehical safety featurers it could get messy ... just giving you a friendly heads up... that's all. I don't blame you for doing it though.... they can be a real pita at times. I'm kinda in the same boat with non airbag compatable seat covers on seats with bags... living life on the edge i guess. Oh, just to let you know... I've never stepped foot in California.

You sir are incorrect. The vehicle on the right would be "ultimate snow vehicle"

If I had to choose which one to send my lady over the mountain pass in it would be that, not my taco.

Yeah, you keep saying that but I haven't had any problems. I know how to drive my truck. And I have a manual, you have an auto. ;)

I know how to drive too , and I would prefer not to increase my stopping distances on snow , and FWIW the truck I drove before this one was a manual

I had mine in the snow today for the first time (not a usual occurrence living in the desert). I took the family up to the mountains to cut this year's Christmas tree and the snow in that area ended up being a little deeper than I thought it was going to be. Bottom line, I think the Rugged Trails suck in snow. I was not impressed at all. It was a little on the warm side, upper 30's, which made mud under the snow, but still, they did not do well.

They're not called Rugged fails for nothing. If you plan on driving in the snow, get better ones.

I never had the ABS kick in unless I stomped on the brakes.

I learned fast where the threshold is to avoid the ABS kicking in. I feather the brakes to keep it below that threshold.

That's about the best you can do, because yeah you don't want to get into a situation where the ABS kicks in.

Here's the other factor that nobody seems to consider , dry snow vs wet snow , anybody can drive in powder

^ i agree. With only 15,000 miles on them mine were so wore down i didn't trust them in the winter a couple years back. Get the bfg a/t's... much better tire.

Chains are the best for deep wet snow. Putting chains on, taking them off, tightening them, low speed limitations, that's the problem. Wet snow and mud, tire chains are dynamite.

    I don't necessarily disagree...
BUT, I might rather have the subaru in icy conditions
Tacoma in the snow, without question

Edit: maybe I should say (especially) patchy-ice conditions; where there's enough dry pavement that you're probably not gonna put the Tacoma in 4wd without binding

You have just described when you should use 4WD, any time it snows. It will not destroy your axles or blow up your transfer case if you drive it on hard pavement I'm not suggesting doing figure 8's in the parking lot but driving it on the road will not damage it. Read your manual particularly the part where is says to drive at least 10 miles every month in 4WD high range Toyota does not say in the sand on ice or mud just drive it 10 miles every month they would not say this if they thought they would have to replace parts under warranty.

I live in the Albany(NY) area and drive to work at 3:30 am. The town snowplows aren't even warmed up yet at that hour. I have 4 studded Firestone Winterforce on my '012 2wd and I drive hilly backroads through the worst storms without a problem. The tires with studs were a little less than $500 mounted on some $60 craigslist rims. My collision deductible is $600. In my mind I'm $40 ahead. I also put 3 60# bags of tube sand in the bed near the tailgate.

Well after a week and a half of snow conditions on my first Taco, decided that the BS Duelers are to be my summer tires. Pretty much suck in snow/ice conditions. Will be replacing with 4 Good Year Silent Armors on the stock alloys for the winter. Will have to choose a new 17" set of wheels for the non snow months and mount up the Bridgestone's on them.
I guess you can't depend on a 4wd truck built in San Antonio to come with a decent set of all season M/S tires.
Tires are the key to traction, you just have to buy what fits your needs in the climate that you live.
