I bought my first 4wd Toyota pickup in 1985. It came with BS Desert Duelers then. Worst tires I ever drove on in snow and ice. Toyota has been putting shitty tires on their trucks for at least 28 years .....

Snow, ice i'd take the taco over anything. All depends who's behind the wheel. I owned a subaru, volvo V70 xc both tanks in the snow I just love the taco. Feel very secure

I'll have to agree with you on that. I've owned a few 4X4 Toyota trucks and Subaru's. After driving both to a few ski resorts over the years (25 area's total... most on trips through the Rockies from Washinton State) the Subaru Outback in my opinion wins hands down. I'm talking on road... the taco would be a better choice in offroad snow conditions with it's higher clearance.

I had three Subaru STI's over the past 8 years. With snow tires on, they are absolute monsters in the snow. Sooooo much fun to drive...

Will miss that a bit this year... but you can't take the STI hunting on the back roads like you can with the Tacoma!

My brother has a Subaru WRX, it's better on the road in the snow. The Tacoma is completely adequate. I use 4wd in any snow.

These are my personal experiences with snow

I have snow on the ground for 6 months of the year...

Had a 1st gen taco that was better in snow than my 2nd gen.

Sand bags are unnecessary when u have 3 feet of wet snow in the back.

I rarely use 4x4 in the worst conditions.... Maybe to get going but it doesn't help u stop that's for sure

it all comes down to driver skill and how much time u drive in snow/ice. And tires lol.

Living in the mountains it's easy to spot drivers who rarely see snow or just never figured it out.

All the taxi drivers use corollas and Prius and similar small cars and do just fine yet it's the bigger trucks in the ditch all the time... And SUV's lol

I still don't get this. 4wd does more for you than help you get going. It baffles me that people only say it's good for getting going. With 4wd the front tires help pull the tuck forward and keep it going straight vs having the back end walk out, the front wheels can help you turn by pulling the truck through the turn. If you start to slide an you hit the gas having 4wd will help correct the slide much more than just the back. And often going down hill downshifting is more effective than just hitting the brakes, which can cause a slide, and witht he 4wd engaged the front tires work with the tranny to slow down the truck in lower gears.

So there we go. 4wd does more than get you going

True for our RAV 4 as well. That thing is amazing on a snowy / icy road with good winter tires

Hey Guys, hoping you can give a 4x4 newbie some guidance!

Wondering if these are good tires to replace the stock 245/75R16s that came on my Double Cab 4x4 SR5? I went with an E rating as some have stated this would be a good choice if towing, which I plan to do. I live in michigan so handling in snow is my main concern.

I would also like to add TRD 16" Bronze Rims (PTR18-35090-BR) to these tires. Everything I have read so far appears to be no problem but looking for the guys who have done it and been there to chime in.

Thanks again and hope everyone had a good turkey day!

I have a trd sport. I go down to 245/75 16 for winter mounted on trail teams. 245 are better than 265 if were talking snow shoes

I just purchased and mounted a set of Hankook I-Pike RW11 snow tires on my truck replacing BFG ATs that I currently run the non-snowy months.

I ran the BFGs all last winter through a few pretty decent storms without any major issue. That being said, I'm not a huge fan of how the BFGs are in the rain/slippery stuff when it comes to braking with the Off-Road braking system. There have been more times I've had to jab the brakes and I set off the ABS which is obnoxious. Replacing the tires has made a huge difference even in the rain I have been driving through. I am very curious to see what it is like in the real snowy stuff.

That being said, I wish I chose different wheels, I'm not as much of a fan of the wheels as I thought I would be. Oh well. Maybe one day I'll trade em out.

I see what u are saying, and if its a wet slushy snow or extremely icy day I will throw it in 4x4 around other traffic

But keep in mind I'm in the snow A LOT and poor so I don't wanna kill my tank and I learnt to drive in a 2wd car in snow when young so each to their own

I basically meant by my earlier post is that 4x4 doesn't help you stop that much. If you can't keep your truck straight in the snow without 4x4 please don't drive up here lol

Up here what we see in the ditch is Subaru's and SUV's we seldom see 4X4 trucks. I'm guessing over confidence. Not sure if the 2WD drive stuff just stays at home or they just drive safer. The 4X4 trucks have been around a lot longer and people have learned how they drive and how to drive them.

OP, figure out what you're getting for tires? The Hankooks seem like a decent tire. Im torn between those and the Duratracs next time around. I'm running BFG's now on my truck and with some wear on them they seem to do pretty well. There is a great tire shop in North Lawrence called Visser Tire. I buy all my tires from them. They give you a price per tire and that's the total per tire. It's a bit from you but might be worth the trip. We are definitely unique here with our road conditions!! Tire choice is very important!

I'm actually headed to Plattsvegas today. Shopping with the Wife and my sister lives there.

My 2.5" 4x4 lifted tacoma + 4 off-road chains= go anywhere, almost. My signature pic was taken in 2 feet of snow at the top of an "interesting" fs road during elk season.

...but on an icy highway, I'd rather be in our little front wheel drive honda fit with snow tires.

I didn't read every post so if this is a repeat, retweet, said already or you think its f'n stupid..

I just had somewhat same experience, I am coming from a 4runner w/3" and 33's, so a lil different.

not ready for new tires yet so had the current ones siped, worked on my '94 yota with 3.5" and 32" muds.

I'll add some sand bags if it still slips.

Agreed. If I had an emergency and I HAD to get somewhere, and the snow wasn't above my bumper, I'd probably take my STi. However, for now it's going to sit in the garage all comfy cozy and salt free.
