So I have a flowmaster 40 series on my tacoma and I absolutely love the sound. I just think it's a little quiet. I've heard swapping out the stock cat for a high flow cat can make it louder. Anybody know if this is true before I spend a couple hundred bucks on a cat? Also what cat is recommended? I was just gonna stay flowmaster but is there something other people prefer for sound?

Don't do a high flow cat, you'll lose back pressure and lose low end power. I'd keep the cats and maybe do an aeroturbine 2525 and a resonator to keep the drone down

Also, I have a Gibson, and people say they can hear me when I pull up to their houses, but not obnoxiously loud

He obviously doesn't care much about the back pressure as he put a flowmaster on there..haha

I, I'm interested her based off that last comment.. I want more sound outay exhaust and am plannin on runnin a "blank" exhaust with a 3" pre-axle drop so that I never have to worry about stuff limits due to exhaust... (And I like the no-tailpipe look).

I was lookin into the borlas but I don't wanna run somethin that's gonna hurt my overall performance... Any suggestions?

While this is a slight thread jack I still think it applies cuz the OP probably has similar questions with the cat idea...

Your a 2nd gen and i am not quite as familar with the 1grfe as i am the 5vzfe, so im not totally sure this will imply to you.

But, for the 5vzfe, Toyota was VERY good at designing the exhaust on the 5vzfe. It has almost perfect back pressure for the most low end torque and power possible while still allowing good high end power.

Opening up the exhaust reduces back pressure a lot and that means a loss in low end torque and power. But you gain high end power. On mine, i have more power just past 3k rpms then i did before. But the low end isn't as strong anymore.

the only time really opening the exhaust up more really benifits you is if your doing forced air induction. ie: supercharger or turbo.

Or if your a drag car and spend most your time in the upper rpms then its all good there too.

For a truck on a day to day basis and offroading, you want and need low end power so really, your just kicking yourself in the nuts but opening the exhaust more.

How about the Gibson that I have? It says it's not designed to have super high flow. They say it's designed to maximize low end torque

I've read this before. I really don't feel like swapping all of my exhaust pipping for smaller diameter tubing

    No idea.

Only way to know is a dyno with stock exhaust, then your new exhaust.

Generally though, you usually loose a bit of low end and gain a bit upper.

I mean come on, how often is the advertising 100% true? haha

I love my flowmaster sound and don't notice any difference in power or fuel economy boost. It's pretty deep and throaty now, I really just want it a little bit louder then it is now. I don't have a drone problem like i keep hearing everybody complain about the flowmasters. You can barely hear it at highway speeds over the wind and tire noise. And I don't want to spend another pile of money on more mufflers and piping. Another thing is I don't want it to sound ricey, and I've heard a Gibson system and it sounded like a ricer

The Gibson I heard sounded like a honda civic. It was on the supercharged 3.4 liter. The best tacoma sound I've heard around our town is mine with the flowmaster

the supercharger changes the exhaust sound dramatically. probably what gave it a more tenor sound.

Built for maximum low end torque, tooter II.VII intake manifold spacer, LCE long tube header, Injen long tube intake, 2,900 rpm torque peak.
That's true. It's a trade off. All other things being equal, if you want more top end horsepower with a more free flowing exhaust, you'll trade off some bottom end torque to get it.

There's a difference between chopping your entire exhaust off and replacing cats.

My perspective is different, though - my daily driver is around 400whp (without a high flow cat) so the Tacoma is gutless no matter what RPM range I'm in. I went to high flow cats on my CTS-V and there was no noticeable performance change.

I am legitimately curious, though - I'd like to see a dyno where adding cats increases torque.
