Yeah I do think that's a problem. You are not supposed to be able to support a family working at McDonalds. Its the lazy ass mentality to just expect to keep getting paid more for the same job.

If you want more money than McDonalds pays, better yourself and get a different job.

My question is what exactly do McDonalds employees do that deserves more than $7.50/hr (current min. wage here)?

I started at BK lounge making less than min wage bc I was only 15, I wanted more so I quit and found a better job. Still wanted more so eventually I got me Engineering Degree and a real job.

It is very hard to get a better paying job. If an employer sees bk or McDonalds on a resume or they see this person comes from this part of town, an employer may just throw it out.

The whole "pull your self up by your boot straps" bs we tell people fails in today's society.

Anyone who thinks that getting more than minimum wage to do any job is wrong should really try living on those wages, that's the point where their ignorance intersects reality. And as far as "better yourself and get a better job", sure, in a perfect world with low cost educational opportunities and affordable day-care and a robust job market, these things would certainly be an option, but wait, oh, you mean jobs aren't plentiful? Oh and assistance for day-care and education is getting slashed? Oh my, guess those folks can't expect a helping hand from anyone huh? That's what these lazy people deserve right? Hmmmm, wouldn't be that we seem to think that some among us are lesser human beings? My gosh, say it isn't so!!!

Seriously? WTF do you think *most* of the jobs in this country are? Not every city in this country is packed full of high-paying, skilled-labor, jobs. No, MOST jobs are the ones YOU take for granted in every day life. Who provides the gas for your truck? The groceries you eat when you don't eat at McD's or BK? What about the clothes on your back?

What the fuck would you do if all of the people manning THOSE jobs said screw this, and went on to higher paying jobs? I mean it, what would happen if all the minimum wage workers moved on? Personally, I think the country would collapse. No food to buy, no working gas stations, no retail stores or fast food, no hotels.... It's not just Wal-Mart and McDonalds paying wages you can't live on.

^This. I have a 2 year degree. I spent a year and an half running the entire IT department of a 250-300 employee company more or less by myself. And yet after I was laid off I couldn't find work for 6 months. "Not enough experience" is what I kept being told. Even though I tested out of 3 classes, and graduated a semester early tied for Salutatorian with a GPA of 3.95 no one would hire me.

Exactly. The poverty line is $25,000 per year. That's $12.02 per hour. Minimum wage is $7.25. So someone would have to work 2 full time, minimum wage, jobs to be over the poverty line. I make double that, and struggle to support a family of 6. Daycare costs $150 per WEEK per KID around here. It actually saves me money to not have my wife work right now.

Those jobs simply aren't supposed to be something you can support a family on. They are supposed to be a transitionary step, not a lifelong, "Imma raise a baby and pay rent with job." Unfortunately that happens though, especially in this economy. Morally, yes they should be paid a wage they can survive on, but they sure as hell aren't earning it. It was more of a statement of value, than an absolute position. I've worked for a $9/hr job before and frankly I would not have paid someone that wage for what I was doing purely looking at it from a value point of view.

That money doesn't just sit there. It gets leveraged by the banks to help finance the country. You may think money sitting in a bank account is doing nothing, but it actually isn't. I'm curious. Do you like to have cash on hand? If so, why is it not ok for corporations to have cash on hand? At what point is it too much cash to have on hand? If you like to have cash on hand, what would you say to a homeless person if he were to make that statement about you? Its all about perspective. http://money.howstuffworks.com/personal-finance/banking/bank1.htm

I like how everybody is freaking out about finding work in the city. Try growing up in rural America. You don't know what limited opportunities and pay are until then.

I think if the minimum wage job holders moved on, the same people who used to work those jobs would. High school and college kids.

We have made the same choice right now, my wife stays home with our daughter. Its a choice we made, just like having children, and it is my belief that we, no one else, needs to help cover any costs.

If people cant afford the choices they have made, they and their's should have to deal with the ramifications of said choices. Can't afford day care, but need to work, sounds like they can't afford to have children. Those are the tough choices our parents and grandparents had to make.

    ^^^True Story!

Hell my first job was walking the bean fields for $3/hr. I didn't bitch about how much I made, I was happy to work.

I am checking out of this conversation now. Just like every other "discussion" on TW, some people cannot simply have a relaxed discussion and openly look at things. This entire discussion comes down to one thing, DO YOU BELIEVE IN ENTITLEMENTS OR NOT? I was raised on one philosophy, WORK FOR OR HAVE NOT.

    What about college kids?

I make $7.40 an hour and cant make more than that anywhere else..

I do warehouse work in the summer for $10-12.75 an hour but that lasts all of 3.5 months. No one wants to pay a college kid more than minimum wage because they know they dont have to.. Its hard enough finding work over the summer let alone during the school year. Places just dont want to hire someone who can only work 7 months of the year during school or 4 months of the year during summer. And its damn near impossible to get a job during my 5 week winter break. No company is going to hire and train you to work for 4 weeks..

Yep. Pay is limited, the work is infinitely more grueling than anything Walmart could dream up AND there is a very real and constant threat of being horribly physically injured. Walmart is a god damn vacation.

Buuuuut to get back on topic a little bit:

There ya go. I agree. If you put in minimum work you get minimum pay. Work hard and guess what, even through McDonald's you can work up to a live able wage. But if you don't want McDonald's you have to go out and learn a skill and work hard to start a career.
