One of my best buds from high school sold his auto SOHC 4.0 because he was going through near $500/month in fuel. He got 14 mpg unloaded as reliably as the sun came up, about 11 with one sled on the flat (open, no wall) snowmobile trailer, and usually about 8-11 in the winter when he had to use 4WD.

Rule of thumb was 50 miles per 1/4 on the gauge, gas light on at 170 miles, every time. I love driving a manual 4.0 but his truck turned me off to it.

He sold it shortly after he found out I could drive my 4.0 like I was playing NFS and still get 18.

2011 Ranger 4x4 V6 auto is rated for 14 mpg city / 18 mpg hwy. Taco in same config. gets 16 / 21 mpg. Simple technology advancement, no need to dispute it. Ford's base 3.7L V6 in the F150 makes 302 horses and gets 16 / 21 mpg.

There is no 2012 Ford Ranger in the United States. At best, they're selling off their remaining 2011 stock. Regardless, I personally wouldn't even consider buying a vehicle for everyday use which I know full well has already been discontinued. The risk of not easily finding parts and service at some point in the future is just too great. Of course, I generally buy vehicles for the long haul (many years), not as trade-ins every few years.

Seriously? There are hundreds of thousands of Rangers on the road and because they haven't changed them in a decade they all need basically the same parts. That and Ford isn't going anywhere.

What is the difference between a discontinued model and a new generation? Parts might be a problem in 50 years but until then I wouldn't worry.

I had a ranger for 5 years an beat it up pretty bad. It was a 4.0 manual trans and it felt like it had more get up and go at highway speed. I used to pack my 550lb motorbike plus another 150 lbs of gear and my fat ass and it would cruz at spped like nothing was in the bed. Also i could fill the bed with freshly chopped wood and it was good to go with no problems at all. After 80K i sold it for a GMC 1500 -- that was a POS that gave me nothing but troubles i then cam to toyota and i am here to stay.

BTW -- the only problems i had was a blown thermostat and pully with a bit of a leak on the valve cover. other than that no rust at all or no other troubles.

I think the main issue with ford is that they have poor quality control. they put out good trucks but if you dont have good quality control more vehicles that shouldnt get to the deal lots make it there.

as for why they discontinued the ranger -- who knows why.

here is what i see in the rest of latin america

    http://www.ford.com.mx/camiones/ranger/conocelo/?intcmp=466

in some countries they have 5 cly diesel engines some with turbos (i think)

again in the usa the selection of vehicles can be limited

^That "global" Ranger is used by Afghan police against Hilux-driving Talibans. :)

This is not a practical concern. The current Ranger design was introduced in 1993 and discontinued in 2011. The 1st gen. Taco was introduced in 1995 and discontinued in 2004. Both models were sold only in North America in similar quantities. Which one do you think will run into parts availability issues first?

I owned a lot of Rangers. My first bought in 1986 was a great vehicle till it went in for a manifold gasket recall. It was never the same again. It would just quit running on 6 cylinders every 8k miles and back to the dealer it would get towed. It went back 4 times total. And every time I told them there was a vacuum leak. I'd get the vehicle back and it was good for another 8k. The final time was when I pleaded with the service manager to look into why the problem always returned. I still remember picking the truck up and the manager told me if it happened again there was a vacuum leak. I drove it to another dealer and traded it in.

Every Ranger v6 I owned had gasket problems and they rusted prematurely.

I also never had one get better than 18mpg. One of the best surprises was when I bought a Dodge 1500 Ram with v6. A full sized pickup that got 18 mpg. I had this one for a very long time.

    Now the Toyotas.
I owned a 1985 4Runner that was absolutely fantastic. This vehicle did anything I needed. If it had a flaw it was the 4 cly auto, it had no pep.

Second 4Runner was a 2001 that I just got rid of for a Tacoma. Another great vehicle though I was not happy at all about the pinholes in the rear differential. Because of this I got rid of it.

Now the Tacoma. Rusting frames? Mine is fine but this may be my last Toyota if it rusts.

WOW! This thread is still going some 2 years after I started it. Well, I traded that Tacoma for a 2008 4Runner some 25k miles ago and couldn't be happier. The torsen center diff with a locker, more weight over the back-end, room for a giant mattress in the cabin with seats folded, excellent/similar aftermarket support all make it a much better and more refined vehicle for my needs. I have been wheeling quite a bit recently, and boy is it much more well behaved than the slippery-assed tacoma with that shitty ass 6 speed.
