Icon Coilovers Question - upgrade to extended travel?

    Can Icon coilovers for a 2nd gen be upgraded to extended travel through a shaft upgrade or spacer swap? About to rebuild mine and was wondering if such an upgrade is possible.

    ^Better to call DSM directly. From what I remember in the pictures, all the shocks are built to be extended travel. The "normal travel" shocks simply have an extra aluminum spacer inside to limit the stroke. To "convert" the shock means to disassemble it and remove the spacer.

    ^Definitely best to just contact DSM. Great guys to deal with an very quick to reply. I also upgraded to remote resevoir with CDC, so my work was quite a bit more involved than just a simple rebuild.

    forgive me, but unknowing if you are 4x4, could extended travel shocks cause you to exceed permissible c/v angles?

    also, do they give you more droop or more compression? so if droop how do you modify lca to droop that far? and if more compression what do you do? cut bump-stop?

    edit: this is really a dead serious question, not to thread-jack but. . .. . im dying to know

    No, they work on 4x4. More droop. Uniball UCA's.

    An update for anyone interested.

    I called Icon today, and they will upgrade coilovers from standard travel to extended travel during a coilover rebuild for no cost.

    Since I am having a friend rebuild my Icon coilovers, I ordered the parts (spacers) for $20 (in my case part 257453 7/8 SHAFT EXTENSION SPACER .600 REVB quantity 2).

    In case anyone is wondering what the spacers that define standard travel vs extended travel for an Icon coilover look like, here they are. My shock oil was black and the coilover was full of sludge. I will rebuild them sooner next time. No leaks, which is what I was waiting for to indicate rebuild required.

    Out of curiosity, what color is new shock oil used in Icons? When I rebuilt a few Risse and Romic bike shocks back in 2003, I recall the fluid was dark red.

    How can I tell if I have standard or extended travel Icon's?

    I had them rebuilt and requested to convert them to extended travel. Is there a way to physically tell they got converted? I forgot measure the length before sending them in so I can't compare the before and after length.
