Had our first frost here this morning

 

Any of you guys ever replace the door gasket on your stoves? My pellet stove's gasket is flat board and harder than a rock. Not really making a good seal. I got a replacement generic gasket for $12 and am going to pull the old gasket out with pliers and use a wire wheel to sand down the old adhesive.

Question: The gasket it more of an oval shape, not sure which side I should cement against the door. I can place the wide, flatter side against the door or adhere the "tip" of the oval. If you understand or have gone through this before, any input is appreciated.

 

First frost? We had our first frost about a week ago and our first snow the other day. You're behind and you're in Canada

 

I don't know anything about an Oval shaped gasket; I've always had round gaskets in my doors. That being said, one tip I can offer is to take the door off the stove and lay it down when you apply the adhesive, especially the liquid stuff.

1) Read instructions on the back of the gasket package
2) Remove door and clean gasket channel w/wire wheel
3) Test fit gasket and cut to length
4) Test fit gasket again
5) Apply adhesive (let dry to tackiness if the instructions call for it)
6) Apply new gasket, pressing firmly into place
7) Reinstall door, close and latch it, and allow to sit several hours for the gasket cement to dry. (note: Some gasket cements require heat to cure properly. If that is the case, lay a small fire in advance of these steps and light it after reinstalling the door)

 

I heat with a pellet stove. At $3.89 per bag, and we burn a bag a day when it's at the coldest. 2-3 tons per winter and no propane. A lot more work than just turning up the thermostat, but a huge savings over propane. And way cleaner than a wood stove.

 

Wow I thought Canada was suppose to be cold. We had a frost about two weeks ago and a semi freeze last week. I almost live in northern Missouri. Although, it has been 60F during the day for the past three days. I guess we have large diurnal temperature swings.

 

Oz lives in the Pacific Northwest, though, so he's got a ginormous heat sink in the form of the Pacific Ocean. I imagine that will push his frosts back a bit. My Grandparents live on the Maine Coast, and they typically don't get frosted for at least 3 weeks later than I do further inland.

 

I'm on the coast , the ocean keeps us a bit warmer

I expect he's counting individual window panes. Old windows used to be made up of many smaller window panes unlike our modern windows which are made of *huge* sheets of double/triple pane insulated eGlass.

I have 45 windows in my house

 

Nope, 39 windows. Original leaded glass, single pane, weighted windows. So that's 37 tops with 6 lights on the larger windows, 4 on the smaller. All 37 have full sheet glass lowers. 2 windows are non opening single pane stained glass style windows, minus the stained glass. The are in the hallway stairs.

Half are painted on the inside, other half I refinished when I refinished all my other stained interior wood work. I have re roped every window at least once, some more. The pulleys don't work as well as they should.

I have a 1920's craftsman style bungalow.

Drafty as hell might I add. We have storms, they rattle and leak too.

Personally, I prefer snowy winters to rainy ones, but the PNW is a really pretty coastline. I have relatives who live North of Seattle, and they spend all winter making jokes about growing mushrooms in unusual places.

 

I have a 2200 sq ft ranch and my primary heat source is my wood stove. I grew up on wood stoves as my dad had one in our house and one in his garage.

I get most of my wood from the utility ROW's and from a friend who is a landscaper. I also acquire a permit from my county and I am able to cut 2 cord usually around September.

The weather here has been all screwy the last few days. I Fired up the Cellar Monster last week because we had three days in a row where it didn't get above freezing, and nights were in the low 20's or upper teens.
And then on Sunday night it warmed up overnight to 45 and rainy, and the woodstove cooked us out of the house (77 degrees inside on Monday morning) and it hasn't dropped below 75 over the last two days. Now the soapstone has finally cooled down and stopped radiating heat, and they're forecasting lows in the teens and highs in the low 30's again for the rest of the week.
So I've got to get the soapstone all heated up again.
