Meh, that was EZ wood, have to gather, cut, split every year (all splitting with sharp Maddox), start in April and kinda finish in October, but keep wandering the hillside 25 acres of trees looking for MORE fallen or broken trees, have chain saw, will cut to suit..

Never can have enough, it is the only heat source for whole house, burn a whole lot each year....

I wish the wood would split like that cherry picked and kiln dried chunk....

When it's only a foot long like what that guy was splitting, well-seasoned straight-grained maple will split like that too. That's usually what I'm burning (Maple is a lot more common than oak around here), and after it's been cut to length and left for six months or so it splits a lot like that.
He definitely wasn't splitting for an all night burn, though, haha!

Yeah , definitely splitting it small

You should try splitting Madrone ( Arbutus ) if it's not absolutely green , twisted gnarly shit , best firewood ever invented one seasoned for 2-3 years though

That round style is usually referred to as a Holz Miete or Holz Hausen. They are a little trickier to build but I prefer the way they look.

I thought it was kinda cool. To me it sounded nice and dry, and even sounded like a hard wood, but split more like a soft. Funny cause if it's Alder, that's a softer hardwood.

Well , quite honestly it depends on the tide , my house is only a metre above the 15 metre setback to the creek near my house and at the highest tides of the year the ocean backs up into the creek past my house so at that time I'm less than 50' away

Just got mine going. I always wait until after thanksgiving to start burning. I burn close to 5 cords as it is.

I have a fire 24/7 until it gets warm out again. Rarely does my fire actually go out. I will let it go down to clean the ash every morning, I also gave a center chimney with a stainless. Liner, so the chimney stays really clean. I clean that every fall.

Yeah, and most of the good saws, stoves, and axes come from there as well. They must be on to something...

Sounds a lot like the Apple that I got last year. Local farmer had thinned out his orchard, so it was really thick gnarly stuff. Even after letting it season a full year when I split it this spring it was nearly impossible. I had to give up with a couple of pieces and do a 'chainsaw split' instead. Burns nice, though. Nothing left but powder once it's done...

Psh. I'll admit to using a Husqvarna saw (Swedish), but both my splitting and felling axes were made in Bangor, ME (Snow & Neally) and my woodstove was made in Vermont (Hearthstone)

Couldn't find a local dealer, but heard they are good.

I went with a jotul. Fits my house style, burns and heats awesome, and accepts a 20" log, which was really important to me.

My house was built in 1920. I put a new liner in when I put my stove in. Didn't want to chance anything knowing I was going to need to keep hot fires to heat well.

Plus cleaning is much much easier. I just about gave it down to a no dust, no mess chimney sweep solo.
