What does this mean??

 

I had 2 friends get ME degrees. One ended up living in a tent in her aunt's back yard in CA for a year or more because she couldn't find a job. Now she's in Alaska, and I have no idea if she's using her degree.

The other friend went back to school in another state for a different degree.

Degrees don't guarantee jobs, nor pay rates. I have a degree, but every place I went wanted experience. Where the hell do you get experience if no one will hire you without it? Even if you have a Masters.

A guy i went to HS with has a Masters in chemistry of some description, and a bachelors in something else. What's he doing? Writing patent laws for IBM, not a damn thing to do with chemistry.

 

Of course. That's kind of what I mean. It's best to network and meet people while in school in your field so you can actually get a job upon graduation. I just think it's silly to expecect that kind of pay when others can't even get a job.

There are plenty of variables that play a part in someone finding work. I know tons of people who immediately found work right out of college. Others, couldn't find anything. Wasn't due to lack of jobs, but to them being picky. Also, someone's character plays a part. Doesn't matter how much you know if you suck as a person, or come off as an ass.

There are plenty of jobs out there that pay really well, but don't really fall under a certain specified study. Yet, the company still requires at least a Bachelors or Masters just because they don't want an idiot working there. So if you have someone working out of their degree field, it doesn't always mean that it was because they couldn't find work in that field, but maybe they could make more doing something else.


No matter what, someone with a degree is going to have an easier time finding work then someone without.
Someone working at a job that only requires 1 day of OJT really shouldn't expect to make much more then 20-30k a year. If they don't like it, they should do what everyone else does, and go to school or learn a craft. Crying about making minimal wage at Walmart, McDonalds, etc... is a waste of time. There are 100s of other non-degree holders without work that would gladly take their spot.

For the guy looking for 78k starting, well you need to focus on finishing that degree and even getting a job first.

Also, money isn't everything. You need to like your work. I think I'd kill myself if I had to work for an oil company. What does an ME even do there, design pumps?
