Gentlemen, lets utilize those brains because I have a unique dilemma. Ok I have installed a pop and lock tailgate lock on my 11 double cab Tacoma and put a tonneau cover on the bed. The tonneau cover is secured tightly, issue is...my tailgate will not open!!! I think I know the issue, I can fix it but I just need it to open or release so I can fix it. The rods have disconnected from the inside mechanism on the tailgate latch and wont catch on to open the sides releasing the tailgate. The tonneau cover is locked and secure, the pop and lock is unlocked but it wont catch to release the tailgate. Has anyone dealt with this?!!! Help please......

What kind of cover do you have, and how does it lock? I have a bacflip vp and it has a cable that you pull to open, and I'm sure you could easily open it with a coat hanger.

The name of the tailgate would be good? If it locks under the rails in the bed?

I hope you have the sliding window in the back if so open it crawl through it with a long flat head screw driver once you are inside on each side where the locking mechanism is you have to pry it to the open position once you have one side open push on it to keep it disengaged then move to the other side and do the same once its open then take off the cover of your tailgate and you should see the whole mechanism most likely you will see something disconnected and that will be the part you will be replacing or reconnecting but then most likely it will happen again..hope that helps.

I was about to make a thread on this on thanksgiving but i felt like an idiot that I locked my self out of my bed, but I figured it out.

Did you put the metal plate back on the tailgate or is it off? Luckily I didn't put my cover back on my tailgate. I just closed my taigate without hooking up the mechanism to open it. I just wanted to mAke sure the pop and lock was flush and clean and I accidently closed it lol. I have the extang trifecta, lucky I was able to lift the trifecta enough to put my hand in there enough to pull 2 metal rods to release the tailgate. Your bed cover cant be moved at all?

If he has a tonneau, how is it going to help him crawl through the back window?

Also when you put on the pop and lock did you transfer over the black and red tabs from the original handle that securely tired down the metal rods??

    I'm assuming you didn't.

thanks for the input but that wont work, even if I open the sliding window and be on top of my tonneau cover and try to pry it does nothing. my tonneau cover is secured and those clamps on the cover aint coming off unless I open it from inside the bed

thanks dude, but sadly, I have an American Tonneau Tri-Fold cover and its secured tightly and wont budge unless I get inside the bed and unlock it. I put the metal plate back on when I put on my pop and lock, that's where I need to get to fix this issue

    e
Dude I did put the red and black tans but one of em broke but I was still able to put it in, I know that is why my tailgate wont open. The rods came off either the black or red tabs, im sure that's why my tailgate wont open. Your reply was spot on man, you are there with me. Im thinking maybe put a coat hanger on the sides and try to pry the gate open, or take it to the dealer see if they've dealt with this before, thanks man

No idea how the locking mechanism works on the cover.... Do they have some kinda lever inside for kidnap scenarios?

If there's rods running down the length of the bed for the cover, maybe popping out the pockets above the wheel wells can get u enough room to reach the rods for the covers locking mechanism?

Not sure if your model year has them, but earlier Tacomas have two storage pockets just above the wheel wells, like the locking ones near the tailgate but open. I doubt you could reach your mechanism from that area. Unless you had arms like Clyde the orangutan. Can you fit a coat hanger or an electricians fish tape between the top of the tailgate and your tonneau, to reach the locking mechanism and open the tonneau?

thanks man, as you can see, with the tailgate up, there is no room for anything to go between the tailgate and tonneau. My only option, im guessing, is to try to get a coat hanger on the sides where the tail gate opens up and try to pry it open
