Does anyone know if it's possible to swap a 4.5 L V8 1VD-FTV turbodiesel intercooler into a second gen? I mean people drop ls1s In wouldn't the 1vd for snug? I know the hilux which is very similar to the Tacoma does come w the 3l diesel but I'm looking to go a different direction.

I know there is an incremental increase on the weight of the motor but with all proper prep and frame reinforcements te weight shouldn't be to much of an issue... Any input?

With a torch, welder, fab skills, wiring skills, MONEY, anything is possible. That will be totally custom.

I'd just go ahead and plan on dumping well north of 10k into the project if you want to SAS it too, more if you can't do the work yourself.

The mounting will be easy. The engine computer will be the not very fun part. Good luck and take lots of pics!

    I get it,
Look this might sound rough but lots of people are stating the obvious here. I know it's gonna take time, money, name it, let's face it anything ican he costs a ton.

I'm looking for info or knowledge like electrical and computer based issue I can expect etc
I was worried the physical size of the motor won't fit,
Then there are other issues like trying to line up the drive train and if I was to sas it dealing w a variety of other figment probs like the pan Etx

Is it much bigger than an LS3? I've seen 2 LS3 swaps, one in a first gen and another in a 2nd gen. The second gen fit snug, the first gen needed the firewall recessed back about 4" I think.

Not sure, I'll have to find dimensions n compare.
The plan is to do 2 builds at the same time and use as much off an fj80 as ican.

    02-04 Tacoma w d4d on 37s w fj80 axles
    07 Tacoma w fj80 motor, d60s on 37s

Damn big projects I know but I'm sure it will be worth

    My good friend here has a 04 w a d4d on fj80s w 37s and twin stick
He switched out to manual injectors and avoid all the ecu related issues.
I will say " winch's" truck is one mean bad ass truck

So I would start with getting dimensions and take some measurements. I've never heard of anyone doing this swap so unless you can find someone who has you're pretty much pioneering this.

You're also going to need some wiring diagrams and figure out what to connect to what to make things like your instrument cluster work. I think it goes without saying you'll need the ECU for whatever motor you get.

Transmission bell housing and clutch might be tricky as I doubt they're compatible with the diesel. Might take machining down the bell housing and making a custom adapter plate.

It will be a fun project though, it's just going to take some serious engineering to get it done as you know.

I'm starting all my phone calls this week and more research etc etc coming in dec.

As I mentioned though, I wonder if it's possible to swap just about the entire drive train over to the 05- the axles and use d60s
As i can use that entire set up and pass just the fj80s to the 04
