the sea shepherd is a non-profit organization... they are run off donations, grants...etc.

and depending on what your definition of "doing something" is... due to the japanese having to deal with the antics of the sea shepherd instead of whaling they fell 500 whales short of their quota last year

and if you watch the show you'll very quickly realize that most of the volunteers on board are not biology majors nor do they know ANYTHING about running a ship.. haha

most of them are just activists that want to save the whales with no background of being on a ship or studying whales or anything relevant in a lot of cases... haha

and i think paul watson was one of the founding members of green peace but left and started the sea shepherd group because he didn't think greenpeace was doing enough to stop the whaling... so they are no longer affiliated with eachother.

thanks for the update...you filled in a lot of the blanks for me.

I have only watched a few episodes, but I was always amazed by the amount of cash being spent.

Keeping them from 500 whales is an accomplishment.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.

I would have never guessed that. I have only seen one whale killed on the show.

Just my 2 cents and nothing else - agree or disagree it doesn't matter.

To me the killing of whales either legal or illegal is the same as killing elephants and rhinos for ivory or the clubbing of baby seals. You can call them pirates, terrorist, or whatever but in my opinion I think the people on the Sea Shepard are doing a good thing.

I don't see the world in strict black or white. Just because something is legal doesn't make it right and just because something is illegal doesn't make it wrong. So to me it doesn't matter if it is legal or illegal for the Japanese to kill whales and if someone wants to go down there and screw up their scientific research then I'm all for it.

I'm not above killing animals. I grew up on a farm and I've fished and hunted my whole life and I've sent quite a few animals to the cooking pot. I even trapped some when I was younger. Call me a hypocrite or whatever, I just don't like the killing of sea mammals, whether they are whales, dolphins, or pinnipeds.

I don't disagree that there is little to no need to be kiling as many whales as they do. Sadly- There is a market for the meat- and one way or the other the demand will be met.

Their tactics are all wrong tho- If you are against sea mammals being killed for no reason- then I'm sure humans being put in unnecessary danger isn't high on your list of cool stuff either. And these asshats do that regularly.

You are a very brave person- I've flown planes upside down, hiked, biked, rafted, jumped, climbed and done all sorts of other cool shit- and I wouldn't go within 2000 yards of those guys. Dangerous seamen with a dangerous type of zeal...Not good folks to go to sea with....IMHO.

You are correct, I don't want to see anyone hurt but it's not like they are dropping grenades from the helicopter or poppin' off .50 cal rounds at the harpooner. Throwing stink bombs and trying to disable the ship is find with me.

Off subject of whales, do you mind if I PM you a question about the Coast Guard? I've been talking to my 19 year son about the Coast Guard.

Ive been watching since the first episode I totaly agree with what they are doing. BUT and its a big BUT these guys and girls are the bigest bunch of pussys I have ever seen and thats besides the fact that not one of them belong on a boat. The best one is when they flip the zodiac boat trying to launch it while there moving dumbasses. The first mate guy is an effing douche bag. Rant over.

I saw an episode while hammered last night and the one thing i remember is when one of the ass hats throwing acid got hit with a water cannon and immediately cried for evacuation and first aid because he was bleeding from his eye. The "doctor" looked over him and said it was only a small cut on his eye lid.

Grow a pair if you want to be a pirate. I have suffered worse injuries cleaning up after the public at the park I work at

You're right. I am going out to be a vigilante and fight crime now.

oh wait, I am not the police, Or any type of law enforcement official. Much like the Sea Shepard organization.

I am not for whale killing, But I am for people trying to make a living.
    To me they are terrorists..
I mean all the Somali's were trying to do was make some money for their poor ass cuntry. they didn't kill people.

The terms terrorist and pirates are labels depending upon which side of the fence you are on.

In 1773 when the Sons of Liberty not only boarded the three ships in Boston but also destroyed the cargo of tea I'm sure the ships owners and the Lloyd's of London considered them pirates.

Samuel Adams, however, said that "The Tea Party was not the act of a lawless mob, but was instead a principled protest and the only remaining option the people had to defend their constitutional rights."

I bet you would be hard pressed today to find many people in America - to include myself - or any U.S. history books that would consider them pirates but by definition they could be considered as such.

As for the term terrorist, I hardly think that term applies either. I would, however, concede the term eco-terrorist. According to the FBI, "Special interest terrorism differs from traditional right-wing and left-wing terrorism in that extremist special interest groups seek to resolve specific issues, rather than effect widespread political change." This would apply to the crew of the Sea Shepard.

Also in the absence of a police force or an effective police force agencies vigilantism can become a necessity. It worked in San Francisco and Montana in the mid to late 1800's

For all you Sea Shepherd fans out there...

As the season comes to an end the Sea Shepherd is under investigation for committing acts of violence at sea when its strategic attempt to cut the japanese transfer line results in a collision with the Yushin Maru 3. No files have been brought against the Sea Shepherd and the Japanese whaling fleet fell 305 whales short of its quota for the 2008-2009 season.

I just watched the last episode...It was pretty balsey for them to run into the other ship like that. Unsure about rules/laws of the water but that looked illegal.
