Thoughts on Trade

K.. No denying that I have been thinking of selling my truck and getting a 4X4. Only thing, the truck I would be getting would need to be a double cab (kids) and Long bed (our outdoor lifestyle).

Mine: '07 DCLB under 65,000 mi / 3"OME / Camper Shell / Thule Racks / Misc other stuff.

CONS: I would (over time), get bigger tires, lift, camper (if the guy takes mine), and blah, blah, blah, and that = more money.. Not sure if the newer (brake-style) LSD is a + or -. My truck is paid off, so the +cash is always a con.

PROS: 4X4.

your thoughts? Also I would do a private party price for private party price. (possible mine at good and other a little higher).

50k miles on a 2-3yr old truck is pretty high...

you could probably convert your truck to 4wd and keep everything.

Its a bit of work but not too bad. just another option

 

truck looks good, just make sure to check it out before you buy

any reason you're looking to trade up to a 4x4? it's always nice to have, but if money's tight, it might not be the best choice from what you already have

 

i gotta agree. 50k is a lot for being a 2011.

Not all sand is created equal!
They way I looked at it, I purchased it as a combination of a practical vehicle and a toy. You can get pretty far with 2wd, but if you plan on investing $ into aftermarket parts, get a 4x4! My opinion, since yours is paid off, get the 4x4 for cheap, transfer all your parts over, then sell your prerunner. Win, win!

 

Yea... But check out what this Big Island brother can get to, and supposedly not even locked. If not super muddy, I should be able to at least get to the Peacock flats camps site correct?? Maybe a front hitch mount, and a tow-hitch mounted winch just in case.

I agree with the "not all sand is created equal", but I can't imagine that the type of sand (for this one fishing spot on Oahu) could be worse than below.



The way I am also looking at it now, if $$ were no option, I would go get it in a heartbeat, but to do a straight trade then need to make the truck close to what I have now, I would be looking at like 6-8 Gs.. That would include about about 4-5 for the +cash side of the trade, then camper, suspension, tires, and all..

I could spring for new ties, compressor, front hitch and even a winch for a lot less...

Crap.. I wish I were better in Vegas (or even liked vegas..)..

 

Like I've said before, if it rains and you're in a 2wd up peacock flats you better be prepared to camp out for a while because you won't get anywhere. I'm not talking Kaena Pt. mud, but slick as shit clay that you won't have any traction in.

Don't let the mileage deter you from buying a Taco, my 05 has 145K on it and still runs great.

Meant the getting stuck in clay type mud. Fully stock 4x4. Stock tires and such. If I did go through with the trade, it would be awhile till I could start modding again.

 

Ahhh, I know why I didnt look at this thread....its because im torn on that decision too! I keep telling myself, yeah, we go make um 4wd, straight front, go all out and make one screamah...
then I remember legality reasons and some other stupid things and think, yeah...keep um around 4-6"s of lift and kinda simple, but useful.
A few times a week it pops into my head to just save money and buy a brand new 4r or taco(ok, a good deal on a used 12+ works too), then go for broke on the 05. thats where I think im at. I can always use the suspension parts I have on a newer style.
Dont get me wrong, I love my truck, but the cost of converting to 4wd is out of my range. If I can find a wreck, im on it.


being an observant driver makes a big difference when off roading. taking the right line and having extra weight for traction is where its at...unfortunately, mud or loose rocks while going an uphill doesnt mix well with a prerunner. theres been times where I had to geev it, and times I had to be towed, or times I had to turn around.
my truck does not do well in sand, but with a head start, damn ive gotten far.

my little brothers 4.0 just made 208k and my taco has 150k. I wouldnt worry about 50k on a newer truck, but id definitely want to find out the history(how many owners, was it og hawaii truck, what they used it for, etc).

 

Brother your pics on the pre runner thread was the reason why I was doubting I even needed a 4x4!! lol..

 

honor'd, but honestly, I dont know peacock flats but I can say my truck on steep grades doesnt mix too well with loose rocks or slick mud. Weight in back does help. I havent aired down for anything before, but im going to buy a small air comp to take camping, so I bet this could be an option.
Ive done Waipio pouring rain with bald tires...literally wires on some tires. Ive tried Mauna Loa main road, ive played on hills on hamakua side, taken it up parts of skyline, drove thru mana road several times, its done fishing spots out kohala coast...oh, ive had to be pulled out of Opihale from the bottom. If I had to go back, id definitely want a 4wd. I kick myself in the ass, I could of bought a 6spd 4wd lifted for 17k before I bought my current one...this was in 08/09.


Ive seen pics of p flats when the DKOR crew was having fun and damn, thats action. It looks fkn nuts when its muddy and theres some obstacles, but im sure theres some simple lines to get around the major ones. I love my tacoma, its just hard to part with with the memories and its paid off.

 

I found an 05 trd 4wd for 2k with no title and missing some parts(like elocker switch). Im kinda hesitant, but I spent almost all night reading up n the swaps. what a headache. I think theres another guy on here from Oahu who did the prerunner to 4wd swap.

 

if its just the 4wd switch missing, thats an easy fix. dunno if i'm the guy you're thinking of, but my swap still isn't done yet. sorting out the wiring is probably the biggest headache.

probably better off doing the FJ transfer case to skip the electonic logic and wiring headache

 

Nice hair cut. I got the same one.. That sand is soft . The foot prints even sink down.

I haven't read through all the post but , airing down to 15-18 psi will make a world of difference. just my 2 cents

Where are you now on the swap(or do you have a thread)?

I may be able to just cab swap…put all the wiring from that in mine. hmm, does sound like a big headache

 

ahh, I think the e-locker switch is just a negative return to close the circuit and energize the relay...confused yet cause I just confused myself

my swap is sort of in my build thread, I have some pics of all of the wiring in the Technical Chat area trying to identify each wire.

as of now; I have to mod my trans support to accept the inchworm trans adapter to keep my 2wd trans and mount the transfer case, shorten the rear drive shaft accordingly, either sort out the wiring or just cave and buy an FJ manual t-case.

I'm thinking a couple of good days to finish it up, but i'm really not liking the wiring portion.

probably get serious on finishing it when work slows down in a few weeks.

 

Either trade or invest in some more recovery gear, like a winch and a pull-pal.
