    We all gotta go sometime.

Guy sits in front of me was out all last week when his father died.

Sucks for sure, but I don't get why everyone gets all worked up when people die like they didn't expect it or something.?. Every single last one of us will die. It's not if, but when.

Maybe it's because I lost a good deal of family young in life and learned to deal with it, but I never get worked up about it. I guess people deal with loss in different ways.....and I'd rather celebrate their lives with laughter and reflection of the good times then morn their losses steeped in depression and negativity.

Last thing anyone who is dying wants is your pity, sympathy, or to be depressed about their departure IMHO.

Heck we don't even have funerals in my family. Just burn us up and spread our ashes into the Atlantic from the same spot. I sent off my grand-mom 2 years ago in RI, my grandfather a couple years before that, and this year I have another member to take up to our family spot to release into the ocean.

From Iowa? If so not much...snow shows up earlier and stays longer. Now Fairbanks is a different subject entirely.

EDIT: I work on Elmendorf AFB (now Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson) which is NE SIDE of Anchorage. 45 min drive south of Palmer. What does your SIL do?

In more ways than one - they lived out of state so they had to drive back for serivces. Financially that's going to be rough for them.

I do agree that people are getting a little too worked up about it but that's uncalled for too.

2x4 is board? Who woulda thunk....

Are they naughty reindeer? Everytime I see those lighted reindeer they have been rearranged into less than festive positions....unless that's what "reindeer games" means

I think everyone has a different way of looking at it. This happened all of a sudden so I think they are a little shocked.
Anchorage isn't so bad. The city is laid out well and easy to navigate. Usually lots of stuff going on year round so you have a reason to get out in the winter. And the weather is pretty mild - being next to the water helps keep things regulated unlike the interior where you can have -50 in the winter and +100 in the summer.
Tell her to check out the Fur Rondy the last week of February and the Iditarod the 1st of March.

Yea I guess. Almost losing my mother 4 times over the past 5/6 years + a ton of other family members passing away must have changed me.

All I know is when she does pass if I take a week off work she would be haunting me and telling me to carry on and stop feeling sorry for myself.

    That's rough.

Not naughty. Just difficult to put together.

    I concur with Anchorage assessment.

And they're moving here in February? ... Yeah she will be an unhappy cold camper until she gets adjusted. Don't scare her, and play up the dry cold angle. It really is a different cold. Felt much colder often when we lived in England and it would be in low 30s but so damp you were chilled to the bone. Isn't really bad here until about -20F or colder or when there's a significant wind chill component.

Now a short nap and see if the sun brings on that extra 10 degrees or so. Still 0F ...:notsure:

I'm not going to scare her. She can figure that it on her own.
