DTF am I are swapping from a stock 99 Elocker 4.10 Axle rear end to a fully backhalved / linked second gen rear end with Elocker and 4.56s to match my 5" over kit up front and push my 35s.

And to push it that much further, just recently supercharged

This is taken directly from the 4x4wire.com website on Tacoma axle information. Note the very last line in bold:

As I said, Me and a buddy have already tried to use a 2nd gen 3rd member, and it would not even fit inside the opening of the 1st gen differential. That and the bolt patterns did not match.

It is not just 4 Runner specific. If you read the entire section, including my specific quoted text it shows that it is 2000-2007 as I recall. The truck in question is a 1999 as I recall from the OP. He can try it if he wants, but I am telling you from personal experience, the 3rd members will not swap out between those two trucks. It does specifically state "This diff cannot be fitted to an older style 8" axle because it uses a larger diameter mounting bolt pattern and because more space inside the housing necessary to accommodate the large bearing cap." And like I said, we tried to get a 3rd member from a 2nd gen to fit a 1997, which has the same rear end as the 1999, and it won't fit. Ignoring the sentence that mentions 4Runner, the LAST SENTENCE in bold states you cannot use the 2000-2007 Toyota diff on an older 8" rear diff.

the V6 diff though is supposed to be for pre tacomas..

I mean i have an 8.4'' diff. My door panel IDs it..not the pre tacoma V6/Turbo one. and im a 96...

Here is the direct link to the entire thread. If you scroll down to the half way point or so, it is the section on rear differentials, and it shows what I was talking about. Now perhaps I am not understanding 100% what I am reading. Lord knows I am human just like everyone else. What I was looking for was supporting information to confirm what I already know to be true, in that a 2nd gen rear 3rd member will not fit in a 1999. As I mentioned, this was already tried, and the 2rd member did not even come reasonably close to fitting inside the housing. Perhaps my interpretation of the information on the site is incorrect, but the actual fitment I do know I am correct on. You all read the page and let me know what it sounds like to you. I am always open for correction in my information so that I can provide the right information to others later.

I guess I can see how you could read it that way. To me I interpreted it as saying "older 8" diff" would be anything prior to that specific diff that was in that section. Hmmm. Food for thought. Either way, still won't fit.:D

you sure the diff you tried wasn't a e locker to and open diff housing? cause that will never work without major housing mods..

Ok I think this all just confused me even more.

So A 2nd gen elocker rear diff will or will not work in a 1st gen 8.4?

no elocker will ever fit in any 8.4'' housing period.

So what about swaping the whole axel. I know its 5 in wider, 2.5 on each side. The spring pearches are different, thesere has to be a kit some where to swap this?

Uh, yeah, I know the difference between them. It was an open diff 3rd from a 2nd gen and an open diff 3rd from a 1997. It would not fit. At all.

yeah, lol. It worked!! thanks all!!
only issue is was the plate that connects the 3rd member to the drive shaft was larger on the 2nd gen so he has to use the one from his old 3rd.

Interesting. I guess I stand corrected on that particular truck swap. And no, not drunk. We were totally sober and I spent an hour trying to get the 3rd member to fit inside the housing. It was hitting on multiple locations and wouldn't fit the opening, so I just said the heck with it. What I was doing was trying to get a 3rd out of a 2007 Tacoma with an aftermarket mechanical locker to fit into my 97. It was a no-go. Glad to see that it did work out. I will be doing some more research.

Even though he now has absolutely no bottom end anymore I would be interested to know what kind of mpg he got on his trip.
