01 Tacoma v6 204k. Recommended maintanence?

I just bought it and I am dropping it off for an oil change. Is there anything I should have my mechanic check for while it's there? I obviously know the timing belt, but is there anything else? Thanks!

 

Good question, I just bought an 02 with now 204k myself. I can almost guarantee any kind of tune up maintenance you can do will improve your ride. Timing belt and water pump are probably a must. They kinda got my order botched but I ended up with enough stuff for another 2 tune ups lol.

 

Thanks for the reply. I'm changing the rear and front diff oil monday and I bought a new engine air filter. I'm also going to do the fuel filter, radiator fluid, transfer case oil, tranny, oil, spark plugs, and anything else I can think of. I'm impressed with how well it runs, but I'm not getting great gas mileage and I hope with these things, I can improve it my 2 mpg. I'm getting between 15-17 mpg. One time I got 12.5, but I was doing a lot of stop and go, so hopefully that was the case. Congratulations on your purchase!

Go synthetic in the diffs too

 

Look into a pcv and fuel filter as well.

 

Too late for the diffs. I already put in conventional, oh well. I'll have to do synthetic next time. I'm going to do the fuel filter within the next two weeks.

 

Oops, just noticed that you did already mention the fuel filter. PCV valve for sure and maybe run some Techron-like additive through the tank and run Seafoam through the vacuum line.

 

I'll buy the pcv valve from the dealer tomorrow. Do you know if it comes with the rubber grommet at the bottom? I've always been leery about those fuel additives and sea foam. I was always told not to put anything but oil and gas in an engine.

 

Just replaced the pcv valve. The old one was all gunked up, deff needed one. I also ordered a new pcv valve hose because it was all rotted. After changing the diff oil, I did notice that the truck felt like it wasn't working as hard to move itself and I have seen improved gas mileage of about 2 . I will calculate my mpg with the new pcv valve installed and see what happens.

 

I was always a bit leery but once I hit 100,000+ I decided to run a quality fuel system cleaner through at each oil change and I tried Seafoam for the first time fairly recently. Results vary, but it seems like it helps, I like it... even if it's mostly psychological

 

Just calculated my city mpg and with the air filter, new diff oil and pcv valve, I have went from 14-15 to 17.5 and that 17.5 was with a heavier foot than when I was getting 14, so I'm pretty pleased. I expect to get atleast 20 mpg on the highway.

 

Nice, good to hear. I get about 21mpg hwy with my 2000 manual. And that's with 33" tires, lift, and an extra 350lbs+ tacked on. My truck is pretty well tuned... and I usually keep my tire psi a bit high and have a fairly light right foot.

 

Wow 21 mpg, that's pretty impressive. I'm going to do my spark plugs next. After 200k on the originals, they are in need for some new ones. I was contemplating doing them myself after finding a really good writeup, but I foresee a disaster because of how long they have been in there, so I think I'll have my mechanic do it and let him deal with it. Do you know roughly how much that would cost for labor, not including the cost of plugs? I'm going to get the oem plugs, but I heard that half of them are denso and the other half are ngk. Should I stick with that combo or can I buy 6 of the same?

 

No idea on labor... I'd try it yourself, chances are none are seized. NKG and Denso are both good, but I'd get 6 of the same.

 

Ok I'll give it a shot. Also, I just put a new hose on the pcv valve and I didn't notice before but is this normal? When you are putting the new pcv valve in and when you feel and hear that little pop, is it normal for the valve to wiggle around?

 

Maybe take it out and compare it to the old one, make sure you didn't break it.

 

21 MPG is not hard to achieve, if you are in a big city with lots of stoplights and whatever, then it will suffer...I actually can get about 23 MPG on the freeway, I have jack the tire pressures up a bit and I will kinda hyper mile behind big rigs that are hauling ass, and I got an Ultra gauge, really helps understanding how your right foot is operating....every little bit helps, especially with cross country trips, which I do every year for 6 weeks of vacation and visiting in California...
